FLUENCY: Activity #1: What are all of the possible uses for your item?

The first step to problem solving or generating anything creative is having as many ideas as possible to choose from. School tends to make students seek one correct answer instead of considering multiple possibilities. Students learn not to go past one.

FLEXIBILITY: Activity #2: Should the word "under God" be in the Pledge of Allegiance?

Flexible thinkers are able to "play devil's advocate," flip to alternate sides of an argument, and ultimately build better reasoning because they can see where an opponent is coming from.

ORIGINALITY: Activity #3: In small groups, how can you show 24?

Challenge: How can your group show 24 as a shape?

Originality is the crux of innovation and the most fragile in school settings where we have “answers.” Most students will keep original thoughts to themselves for fear of being deemed "weird" by peers or "inappropriate" by teachers. Originality involves the greatest risk taking of all creativity skills. Open acceptance and respect for original ideas is vital to developing and maintaining students' originality. How peers and teachers react to ideas can make or break originality.

ELABORATION: Activity #4: Use the Ipad to complete the drawing.

What if you were handed the Ipad of your neighbor? Now what?

As students become more fluent in generating ideas, for example, they want to explain and embellish upon them. Elaboration takes an inspiring or original idea and completes it. Sometimes "the devil is in the details" to accomplish a creative task.
