Blue Bear Notes
Mashburn Elementary - April/May 2022

Dear Mashburn Families,
How can it be the last month of school? The second semester has completely flown by. Thanks so much for welcoming me to Mashburn Elementary. I have truly enjoyed serving as the Interim Principal this semester! There are a few events we have over the next few weeks of school that we are excited to be able to experience with parents on campus. We know for many of you, this will be the first opportunity to attend events with your child at school.
As always, thanks for everything you do to support our school! Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Fonda Harrison
Interim Principal
Georgia Milestones Assessment
The statewide Georgia Milestones Assessment will finish up next with fourth grade. Parents should have received an email from the district with testing information and dates. Please make sure your children get a good night’s sleep to be ready for the test. Also, to eliminate distractions during testing weeks, we are not allowing visitors into the building as classroom volunteers or to eat lunch with the students. As a quick reference, subjects and testing dates for fourth grade are listed below:
Grade 4: ELA-May 2 & 3, Math-May 5
Dual Language Immersion (DLI)
Dual Language Immersion is a form of education where students are taught academic content and literacy in two different languages. This program is offered at Mashburn for beginning kindergarteners. The deadline for registration in the program is May 15, 2022. Here is the link for more information about Forsyth County Schools-DLI and the application DLI Application (English), or DLI Application (Spanish).
Parent Portal Access
As we get closer to the end of the year, we want to make sure that all of our parents have a Parent Portal account. Access to this account is important because we no longer send out paper copies of the end-of-year report cards and Georgia Milestones scores. This account gives parents access to report cards, student attendance, state testing results for grades 3-5, and all school communication that is sent out through Messenger during the school year. One account will allow you to access the information for all of your children. If you do not have an account, please contact Gini Kieffer at 770-889-1630 ext. 752100.
Birthday Ice Cream Orders
With supply chain issues and available freezer space, we are requiring that ice cream for birthday celebrations be placed no later than two weeks prior to the celebration. This allows enough ice cream for students to purchase on a daily basis and for party celebrations. If your child has a birthday anytime in May and you want to order ice cream for their class, the order MUST be placed no later than May 9. We will fill orders until the last day of school, but need to order supplies in advance. The cost for the class ice cream celebration is $30. This is the only approved birthday celebration snack. Thanks for your understanding!
Car Line Volunteer Sign Up
We have truly enjoyed and appreciated having our parent volunteers during morning car line. If you are interested in helping during the month of May, please use the link below to sign up! We are asking that volunteers arrive between 7:35-7:40, so that we can share important information about the logistics of the line. Your children can sit inside the cafeteria until the 7:45 bell rings. Here’s the link to sign up for a morning, or two, to help! MES Car Rider Parent Sign-Up.
End-of-Year Events
For all EOY events, parents are welcome to attend, but please make other arrangements for younger siblings. Look for communication from your child's teacher regarding details, limitations, or special circumstances. It will be included with the event and will be communicated by the teacher prior to the event. Because the sign-in procedure can take some time, please let your teacher know if you are attending an event and plan on arriving early for the check-in.

A Message From Nurse Shannon
Dear Mashburn Family,
Happy Spring and almost Summer!
MEDICATION PICK UP
If your child has medication in the clinic this school year, you will need to pick it up by 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 26th, 2022. If you are unable to come that morning, please contact me to arrange an alternate time for pick up at F40655@forsyth.k12.ga.us. Please remember, we are not permitted to store medications over the summer and per the FDA, any medications not picked up will be destroyed.
HEALTH CONDITIONS
This Summer is a great time to check in with your child’s doctor and have Forsyth County Medical Forms ready for 2022-2023. (Acceptable forms for the next school year must be dated after May 31, 2022.)
If your child has a Health Condition, you will need to obtain new Care Plans and forms for the 22-23 School Year. These forms are available on both the Forsyth County Web Page and the Mashburn webpage- HERE. These forms are under the Student Support Services tab on the bar near the top of the Mashburn Elementary webpage. A drop-down box will appear, click on School Nurse. Go to “Forms”, and there you will find all the necessary forms to send/bring to your child’s Physician.
You can bring these forms, along with any necessary medications/equipment to Open House and turn them in to me. Please remember that all medications require the “Request to Administer Medication” forms, one for each medication. All Prescription meds require the Physician to complete and sign this form as well as complete the care plan and sign. If you cannot find a Care Plan specific for your child’s condition, please have the Physician complete the “Individual Action Plan”.
A Parent or Guardian must bring meds with forms to the School Nurse to sign in as students are not permitted to carry and deliver these.
REMINDERS
*Please make sure that you change out your child’s spare clothes in their book bag for the
season-appropriate clothing.
*If you want your child to have sunscreen on, please apply at home before school, and please
do not send any sunscreen to school.
*If you wish to send a hat or sunglasses in for outside recess, please make sure your label
these items, as well as jackets and water bottles with your child’s first and last name and
grade. Please remind your child that sunglasses and hats should be removed while inside the
building.
*Please send your child to school every day with a full water bottle.
*Please send a light jacket or sweater to school with your child each day. It may be warm
outside, however, the classrooms are airconditioned so they may need one so they are
comfortable.
*Please consider sending your child in sneakers and not flip-flops. Flip Flops are hazardous for
climbing on playground equipment, as well as they do not protect feet from Ant bites and
other injuries.
COVID
Please remember to also notify the school if your child has been exposed in the home to others who have tested positive for COVID. Also, fill out the COVID form linked under Quick Links on our website & linked below if your child tests positive for COVID (also linked below).
COVID-19 Positive Reporting Form
Thank you for all you do at home to keep your children healthy and safe. Feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or updates you may have about your child's health. Together we can try to keep our Blue Bears healthy and happy learners!
