October
From the desk of Dr. McDaniel
One of the most important events this month is Parent-Teacher Conferences! We need 100% of our parents to come and meet one-on-one with their child's teacher. It is so important for us to be a TEAM when it comes to your child's education. Come and learn how we can work together to bring out the best in your child. Teachers will be sending notices home for you to sign up if you haven't already. You can also call the office to schedule your appointment.
We are working diligently to provide a safe and orderly environment for ALL students at Sunset. Our teachers work hard to ensure we have uninterrupted instructional time every day. We appreciate your support in talking to your child about what students are expected to do at Sunset to keep themselves and everyone else safe!
I want to thank our parents in the car rider pick-up line! I noticed the other day when I was coming back to the school, right before dismissal, that you were being very careful not to block the driveways of our neighborhood homes! Thank you so much for being so considerate and modeling good citizenship in our community!

STEM
Physical Education and Health
In health we will be beginning our unit about the various body systems. Along with learning about the different body system, students will also be using various manipulative to
learn about and create body systems.
Music
My name is Michael Relland, your new music director! I have taught band, orchestra and choir in Arizona, Maryland and Texas and look forward to being in Edmond near family. Each week, I plan to bring in a different instrument to show students the expansive possibilities of music in their lives. Studies show that participation in a music group helps young people to greater accomplishments in their school career. Here is what we're doing with the students at Sunset:
-Honor Choir meets each Tuesday and Thursday in the Cafeteria to prepare for concerts through the year.
-Our younger students perform music games to practice steady beat,
as well as learn the basic elements of music: high/ low, long/ short, soft/ loud, etc.
-Grade 3 practices good breathing and physical discipline through the recorder.
-Grade 4 investigates the texture of music using many kinds of xylophones.
-Grade 5 deepens their teamwork strategies in drum circle.
Library Adventures
It is so fun to see the excitement in our students' faces when they are finding books they love. Ask you child what they are reading this week and share in the excitement with them. Kindergarten classes have been learning about fractured fairy tales. Ask them which one they liked the best and how it was different than the fairy tale version we all know. 1st grade has been learning the characteristics of fiction books. Ask them how they know a book is fiction. They love to brag about what they've learned. 2nd-5th grades have been using our PebbleGo Database. PebbleGo is published by Capstone Press and has 6 different non-fiction databases. Students in all grades can access it from home at http://www.pebblego.com. The username is sunepsd and the password is school.
Our Scholastic Book fair will be held October 8th-12th, 8:00 am to 3:00 pm and also during Parent/Teacher conferences on Thursday, October 11th, 4:30-8:00. If you would like to volunteer at the book fair you can sign up at this link: https://volunteer.scholastic.com/#/signup/qxaaTsZ08. Title I Program
How does my child benefit from Title I funds at Sunset Elementary?
- Title I funds are used to purchase supplemental materials such as books, reading and math resources, STEM activites, technology, and more!
- Title I funds are used for extra professional development for teachers including professional books, videos, and workshops & conferences.
- Title I funds are used to fund parental involvement opportunities such as our Parent Academies! We are also able to purchase online reading and math programs that can be used at both school and at home such as Imagine Language & Literacy and Reflex Math.
- Title I funds are also used to hire tutors to work with your children during the school day in the areas of reading and math. We have four tutors, who are certified teachers here at Sunset: Gail Brown, Staci McCoy, Brooke Harris, and Jennifer Dishman! These teachers work alongside the classroom teachers and the other Title I staff.
Look for notes coming home soon in Thursday Folders about our District-Wide Title I Trunk or Treat event! It will be Tuesday, October 23rd, 5:30-6:30 PM at Edmond Public Schools Administration Center. Busses will be used as shuttles to and from Sunset to EPSAC for the event! More info coming in Thursday Folders.
Sincerely,
The Title I Team
