Spoto NJROTC is Not Done Yet!

By Allison Marcela Arellano

Many who remember Spoto's own NJROTC remember the multiple wins and back-to-back which would easily take them to states and later to the national competition. The 2019-2020 school year was the last year Spoto qualified to go to Nationals and defend their title as one of the nation's powerhouses NJROTC schools. Unfortunately, Covid-19 made all competitions virtual and Spoto has not made a national title yet. Like all things after covid everything became new and Spoto had to restart but luckily with proper motivation, guidance, practice and extra time our instructors Master Chief Green, Chief Dullum, Lieutenant Commander Lewis and our newest addition First Sergeant Bowman gave their heart and soul.

Last years (2021-2021) cadets were fresh from quarantine and were making the routine while these years (2022-2023) perfected the routine and made it their own. On March 4, 2023, at States, the academic exam, which is an hour long and 100 questions, which is a 4-year comprehensive exam of NJROTC curriculum from basic nutrition to history of the Navy and Naval battles. Next is the Athletic portion of the where our cadets compete who can do the most Push-ups and Sit-ups on cadence for the duration of 5 minutes, Congratulation's to Cadet Ensign Herandez who did 303 sit-ups and Cadet Ensign Workman who did 235.

Upon the completion of athletics, the most intense portion of the competition takes place, which is the Personnel Inspection which includes a question-and-answer period where active duty or retired military officers/enlisted ask questions from a list of knowledge needed to be memorized and answered back in military bearing. Always after Personnel Inspection we have drill portion which consists of Color Guard, Unarmed Exhibition/Basic, and Armed Exhibition/Basic which are all graded from a special rubric to ensure all movements and presentations are to the upmost perfection. At this point we prepare for Spoto to win the 100-yard relay!

This was a team effort and a full day of excitement.... Spoto High School brought home the following awards:

First Place Unarmed Exhibition

Second Place Armed Basic

Third Place Athletics overall

Second Place 100-yard relay race

Third Place overall team sit-ups

Second Place Personnel Inspection

Overall, in the meet 3rd place in the state!!

Next up is awaiting an invite to Nationals in Pensacola by Area 7 Manager Commander Thurman! Congratulation & Good luck SHS NJROTC

HCPS Family Survey

Spartans,

You are the most important people in your child’s life, and we want to ensure that you have the opportunity to shape their school experiences. We’re asking that you participate in our 15-minute FAMILY SURVEY that will help our school improve our communication, academic programming, and overall experience for you and your child. The survey will close on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.

The FAMILY SURVEY is designed to help us understand your experiences with our school and gain insight on how we can engage with you more effectively. Together we can create the best learning environment possible for your child.

We are working with TNTP to conduct the survey. Responses will be anonymous and only used to inform future family engagement strategies. Families should only complete one survey per child. If you have children at more than one school, please complete the survey for each school at which you have a child. If you have multiple children at one school, answer the questions with your eldest child in mind.
