Weekly Happenings

This week, we learned talked about how to use some specific strategies when reading in order to read more fluently. We are really focusing on smooth oral and internal reading, since that is a HUGE factor in comprehension. We also talked story maps and retelling a story in a sequential order. We learned about adverbs and practiced adding them into our stories.

In spelling, we learned that when the letter r follows a vowel, the vowel makes a new sound. We specifically focused on -ar and -or.

In social studies, we finished up our research on famous African Americans and have begun a study on presidents and first ladies. We are loving learning about historical figures!

In math, we transitioned from discussing addition strategies to beginning subtraction strategies. We also celebrated the 100th day of school with some fun math games and review skills! Next week, we continue our study of addition and subtraction skills.

In science, we started talking about air and weather. We made windsocks and experimented with them outside, and began tracking daily weather conditions.

Note from Nurse Lander

Please see below for a link to an update from our school nurse. As we are in the midst of cold and flu season, she asks that you remember a few things.

Remember... your child MUST BE fever and vomit free for 24 hours before they can return to school. Thank you for your consideration in this!

Valentine's Day Cards and Boxes

On Friday, Feb. 12, your child will need the following:
  • Their valentine box (see below for ideas)
  • 22 Valentine's Day cards for their class (handwritten and ready to pass out)

Please DO NOT send cards or boxes to school early. We don't have the storage for those.

Thank you!

Thank you so much for having your child to school on time during first grade's weeks hosting Lakeside Live. This is always such a good experience for your child, and really helps them become a part of our school's community! They were so cute, and we could not be more proud of them!

Mid-Year Assessments

We are working diligently to formally assess each learner and give you up-to-date information on your child's progress. We will be completing mid-year assessments over the next couple of weeks.

Mid-year data sheets (like the ones you got at the October conference) will come home on Friday, February 19. We ask that you sign and return those.

If we have a concern about your child, we will be contacting you to set up a conference. If you wish to conference, please let your child's teacher know after the mid-year sheets come home. We're happy to answer any questions you have!

Winter Recess Details

Our recess is at 10:30! We go outside as long as it is 35 degrees or warmer... PLEASE dress your child appropriately!

  • Label coats, hats, mittens, sweatshirts, etc.
  • Check lost and found frequently for missing items.
  • Encourage your child to be responsible for their belongings and bring jackets home from cubbies EACH DAY! We supervise as they pack up, but we cannot do full cubby sweeps each day, and fostering more independence is the goal. :)
