# Poisson Distribution

### The fishy side of statistics

## Requirements

In a poisson distribution: Every happening has to be random, they cannot depend on each other, and they have to be evenly distributed over a specific interval.

## The VariablesPoisson Distribution | ## XIn a poisson distribution, the x has no upper limit. It represents the the number of happenings of events over an interval. | ## MeanThe poisson distribution is affected by the mean. In a problem, you use this average. |

## Example:

Left-handed people tend to die an average of nine years sooner than their right-handed counterparts. Find the probability that a left-handed person dies 7 years sooner than their right-handed counterpart.

## mean = 9 x = 7

The probability for this occurring is .1171
