NEWS & NOTES
Our vision should be known by all. In breaking this down, our learning environment will be:
- Positive- set the tone in our classrooms by building relationships and reinforcing positive behavior
- Engaging- instruction will be interactive and driven by student needs. This means intentional planning through posted I CAN statements aligned to daily lessons.
- Rigorous- Our instruction needs to be challenging and aligned to standards. Deconstructing standards into skills and teaching how to apply the skills is the end game. Critical thinkers are the desired outcome.
Shout outs for the week:
- THANK YOU for ALL you do!!!
- THANK YOU Ms. Norman, Ms. Griffin, and Mr. Russell for mentoring our runners in preparation for the Monumental this weekend. GOOD LUCK!!
- Lunch on me on Tuesday from 12-1 pm!!!!
Peace Learning Center will be providing PD around Ch. 2 and Ch. 3 of our book study Engaging Students with Poverty in Mind on Tuesday, November 8th. We focused on the Rules of Engagement at our last staff meeting. This PD will focus on Engaging for a Positive Climate- which is a big part of our vision at Wendell Phillips. Engaging, positive learning environments increase student academic and social achievement. Please make sure you have read Chapter 3 prior to that PD, which will be on Tuesday from 11-12.
PD on Tuesday will also include support from our ESL department in the morning. Adam Pitt from the ESL Department will be partnering with Ms. Delbridge to provide instructional and social practices to support our ESL learners. They, being Adam and Ms. Delbridge, will be available in the afternoon as you plan for any additional questions or supports.
Finally, you will have the afternoon of November 8th from 1-4 to plan and work in your classrooms. Expectations around this open planning time include planning out units and assessments to check for student mastery throughout these units. Coaches will be working with you for part of this time. Also----data walls MUST be updated with current data (3-6 Benchmark/Standards/RAPS) (K-2 DIBELS PM/Sight words) by the time you leave on Tuesday.
Long Evaluations will continue in November. These will be 30-45 mins in length during TDR times (ELA or Math). I will be looking for how you connect your objectives to the learning in your classroom- how intentional are you in the planning process? How rigorous is the instruction? How are you engaging your students daily? How are you making every instructional minute count? Is your classroom a positive environment that supports optimal learning conditions? Just keeping this at the front of your minds for what I expect to see. Remember...this is a growth model cycle....where you are now is not where you will end up if you take the feedback from evals and walkthroughs and implement with fidelity.
Take a look at the first article under the DIY section. It talks about the stress we encounter daily and ways to turn it into a positive force for us to use. Our jobs are stressful....but lets take that stress and reframe it!
I have sent everyone a link to join our Schoology page....we will SLOWLY begin transitioning everything to this site. Please respond and accept....thanks for those of you that have done so already. If you have any questions, please let me know!
