Career Day - November 3, 2016

We are planning our annual CAREER DAY for all of our students. Parents and volunteers from the community are invited to participate. YOUR career is important to our students. We will need adults who are interested in stimulating and enriching the students’ knowledge and in giving the students an opportunity to learn about exciting career choices. You are an invaluable resource to offer our students. Together, let us expand our students’ career visions.

We welcome your volunteer involvement from one class period to the entire day if you choose. There will be one career presentation per class period. The presentation will last 20 minutes with a ten-minute question and answer session. The goal is for each student to arrive at each of his/her four core subject class periods and hear a presenter speak about his/her career. By the end of the day, every student will have heard four different presenters.

If you are interested in presenting, please complete this form and return the bottom part to me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. If you have friends or colleagues who are interested, please copy this flyer and pass it on to them. More information may be obtained by calling me or sending me an e-mail.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER

Cowboy Character

American athlete Mohammed Ali once said:

“A man who has no imagination has no wings.”

He was saying that our imagination allows us to soar to greater heights. Think about it. If we can’t imagine ourselves as successful human beings, we may never spread our wings and fly toward our dreams.

Before you go to sleep tonight, take the time to turn off the TV, the phone, the video games, and the computer. Sit quietly. Be still. Then spread your wings and fly into your imagination. Imagine your goals and your dreams. Remember: You are a unique human being with unique dreams, and one of those dreams might someday make a huge difference in our world.

RODEO Tip of the Week

A Few Mind Shifting Tips for Cultivating a Growth Mindset at Home

  1. Help children reconnect with a time when they learned something new that was a stretch or a challenge. Point out the developmental nature of “getting good” – we all go through the process of making a lot of mistakes, practicing, and then getting better.
  2. Help children get curious about mistakes. Help them reframe a mistake as new information or as a step in the process of learning. In addition, help them incorporate self-correction in their own learning process.
  3. Help children learn to hear their own fixed mindset “voice.” Capture and in a gentle and appropriate way, share their own statements with them. Most children are unaware of this self-talk because it has gone on so long and is subliminal.
    • That guy is smart; he never tries and he gets it.
    • I got it wrong again, and I’ll never get this.
  4. Help children talk back to negative self-talk with a growth mindset voice (i.e. give them language).
    • I am willing to learn new skills to improve, and I know it will be hard at times.
    • I get better and better with practice. This is hard, but it will get easier.
    • Practice makes permanent.

PTA Parent Program: Safety in the Digital World

Please Join us for the Katie Greer Parent Program on September 26 or 27.

It’s often overwhelming being a parent today in our technology-driven society. Keeping up with the latest trends and dangers can often seem like an impossible task. Katie Greer is a recognized national expert in Internet/digital safety and technology. This program is a must for every parent concerned about keeping their kids safe.

Two free sessions are available:

September 26th @ 7:00 pm in the Murphy Middle School cafeteria

or

September 27th @ 6:30 pm in the Rice Middle School cafeteria.

Katie will help you navigate the digital waters and let you know what’s new, what’s now, and what’s next when it comes to your children and technology, and provides parents with proactive initiatives to keep kids safe. She’ll answer questions such as: What apps should I be worried about? Is social networking safe? Is my child being cyberbullied? What’s texting? Sexting? What’s next?

Katie has presented to hundreds of thousands of students, parents, educators and administrators across the country. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to be informed.
