Have you ever heard complaining in the workplace and thought, “Change the record!”

Effective leadership, shared decision-making, strategic planning, alignment, recognition and reward are all beneficial elements the enable upward mobility of an organisation. They can also be beneficial in creating productive cultures and climates in workplaces across the spectrum.

“Nothing makes people more productive than a workplace culture and climate that is enjoyable, empowering, engaging and embraces not only organisational success, but individual accomplishments as well. "Organisations that have prioritized learning and development have found increases in employees' job satisfaction, productivity and profitability" (Watkins and Marsick, 2003).

What you are really saying is that you have either complied, given up and moved into institutional inertia or simply you are bored of hearing the same complaints.

There are leaders and there are followers and some leaders are autocratic and have crafted an autocratic work culture that extinguishes creativity and your right to question things that don’t make sense.

We can all be leaders but in this instance, let’s imagine a hierarchical structure, with a top dog, pyramid structure. A manager though,has responsibility to report up to a leader (the CEO) however, they are responsible and accountable for overseeing departmental provision on a daily basis; manager of people, processes and the smooth delivery on products or results (KPI's).

As individuals, we are creatures of habit. We get used to ways of doing things and exhibit resistance to change. It may be fear of failure, success, rejection, loss or just difference.

Those of us with a growth mindset adapt easily however, those of us with a fixed mindset will take things a lot harder. For the academics, look up Carol Dwerk here.

Look back and watch your behaviour and the feelings inside.

So, in this moment, I am thinking, this article is as useful for a manager as it is for an individual being managed and lead – after all we all have the potential to lead and be leaders right?

You could also say we are all addicts.

Some of us are addict to pain, Some of us are addicted to debt, some of us are addicted to rejection.

When we aren’t addicted, we are in fear of it.

We do the rehearsal, repeat the habits.

This takes intense effort, motivation and programming on our part. We religious train our sub-conscious mind.

Think about it – how come we repeat another failed relationship?

How come you attract another boss who is a bully?

How come you know that the diet you have is increasing your weight and making you more and more unhappy yet you still do it?

5 Positive steps to follow

These are just some of the new positive habits that you can follow when the mind and the emotions are working as partners to disempower you.

STEP 1. You are the master of your mind and you have the power to change this.

Place your right hand on your liver ( upper stomach). Close your eyes and repeat, “I am the master of my self. I have the power to change this in an instant.”

Step 2. RE- Programme your mind – Watch the thinkers in your mind. Listen carefully to the voices in your head. Stand back and thank the voices. Ask, is this helpful for me right now? This is where the compulsive destruction uses up your energy.

Step 3. RE-member who you really are and what your values are. Ask yourself what is important in life to me?

When you have this answer, ask, what am I taking on that I need to let go of?

Stand up. Gripping your hands with a coin inside and for every reason you give, open one finger on your hand until the coin falls to the floor.

Step 4 RE-alise your true self – Align your emotional, mental and spiritual self,. Dis-ease is caused by you and can be undone by you. Take time to listen to your body consciously and get out of your mind. Do this consciously by regularly taking depth breaths, following the breaths and feeling where you hold fear in your body.

Thank it and send it away. Replace it with a happy thought and image and feel the feeling of gratitude inside your body. See it fade away as you turn down the brightness and it shrinks into the size of a postage stamp, then a dot, then disappears.

“Understand the present state of the organization and be abreast of the necessary steps to achieve the expected outcome. Begin with the end in mind” (Stephen Covey).

Familiarize oneself with employees’ abilities (when applicable) beyond the skill sets they were hired for (e.g. gifts, talents, interests, concerns), which in essence could become an asset for the organization. Strategically align employees who have skills and abilities that profoundly coordinate with the specific strategies and techniques required to move the organization forward. Engage stakeholders to become followers (buy-in) of the vision, as well as generate leaders along the way.

5. Step 5 – Stop all negative criticism – judgement and criticism is destructive and kills the soul, leaving the body walking around.

These are just a few elements that are pertinent to establishing a workplace culture and climate that creates a platform for organizational growth, success and sustainability. There should be no big “I” or little “You”. No one is exempt, including leadership, when it comes to making cultures and climates within the workplace beneficial and operative. Be proactive, engaged, consistent, fair, accountable, creative and always assessing the progress and non-progress of the workplace environment, the people and the organization as a whole on an ongoing base. It is a win-win for all!
