Principal's Weekly Update

Term 3 Week 3

RAISE Goal: to make an effort to include someone new in your activity at break times

Te reo phrase of the week: Kia ngawari o ringa (Gentle hands)

Kia ora,

A fine and settled period of weather has enabled us to get outside and make the most of our opportunities. On Monday Sarah Brittain took the running group to Lake Rotokare and Thursday saw the enviro group head down to McDonald’s Glen to set up pest control traps. We also had a number of sports practises going on throughout the week. I would just like to thank Amanda Sherman, Gemma Adams, Angela Burke, Emma Mulliss, Megan Horgan, Sarah and Matt Brittain, Piri Madams, and Garth Te Waaka. All of these parents have been involved in coaching either netball, basketball, running, or football. Your support and hard work is very much appreciated and without it we wouldn’t be able to offer our students the fantastic sporting opportunities that are currently available to them.

Fitness Course

It is so wonderful to see our fitness course back to full strength again. The climbing ropes have been replaced and the cargo net repaired. A huge thanks to Ross and the crew from Ballance for their hard work in making this happen.

Enrolment Scheme Update

Matapu School is currently conducting formal consultation about our proposed Enrolment Scheme which was advertised in the Taranaki Star on Thursday 23rd July. If you have any submissions about the proposal please forward them to by Thursday 3rd September. A copy of the proposed scheme may be viewed at the school office.

Cross Country

Our school running group ran 4km around Lake Rotokare on Monday morning. It was such a beautiful day for a run. Thanks to Sarah Brittain for organising this and for the parents who came with us and helped out.

Room 1

This week our Big Buddies were invited to the Preschool to meet Zappo the Magician. Big Buddies are kids from Room One who meet a new entrant who is transitioning to school to help them out. They spend Thursday afternoons getting to know their buddies at 4Stars and then regularly check in with them once they start school. This is such a special time for both students and parents and we love being a part of it!

Room 2

Room 2 has started training for Cross Country, and this week we have been working with our buddy class (Room 5), running around the field and school each day. We love racing our buddies and keeping pace with each other.

On Thursday we looked at health and safety in our work space for our rocket challenge. Nicki, our Ambassador from Ballance, brought in all of her protective gear that she uses at work. This included a face mask that is used in the event of an ammonia leak. James and Ryder got to try the masks on.

Room 3

We have had a busy week working hard on helping our own learning this week. Our math class focus for the next few weeks is division. We are helping each other think about the different ways we can divide numbers. Our report writing has continued this week. Room 3 are thinking like scientists and reporting facts about animals, people and places. We started our Makerspace hands-on challenges this week and had great fun making boats that float and can be moved by blowing them. There were some great discussions about what enabled the boats to float and fantastic teamwork making and improving them.

Room 4

Week 3 in Room 4 has gone like a flash! It has been great getting to know each other more and more each day. We have been getting out to do cross country practice every day and are keeping a track of how many laps we can run in the set time. In class we have been working hard to learn the songs for our Kapahaka performance.

Room 5

In room 5 this week we have been having loads of fun with some buzzers that someone kindly donated to our class! So far we have had a general knowledge quiz and THE ULTIMATE MATHS QUIZ CHAMPIONSHIP!!! Who said math couldn't be fun? Everyone competed in knock out rounds until we finally got to one winner which was Leah!

Room 6

Be part of the election team

Hiring is underway for the 2020 General Election with people needed to fill over 25,000 roles.

"This is an opportunity to be part of the election team and help voters have their say at the 19 September election and referendums,” says Chief Electoral Officer, Alicia Wright.

A variety of roles are available including working in voting places and counting votes. The work can last from one day to a couple of months over the election period.

“They are all paid roles and we’ll provide the training and support you need to do a good job,” says Alicia Wright.

“Voting places are run by people who live in the area, so it’s a great way to get involved in your community.”
