Getting started
- If you don't have your password, e-mail Doug Greene with your full name. greene@swcciowa.edu
- Be sure to know the due dates for your online class assignments. Unsure? Contact your instructor.
- It is important to get logged in; attendance is being taken each week based on the minutes you have spent in class online.
- If you are having trouble getting an instructor to respond, send a message to the instructor and carbon copy (cc) me (send the message to both of us at the same time). My e-mail is greene@swcciowa.edu. Then I can legitimately get involved and follow up with the instructor. Communication "trouble" happens in face to face classrooms as well; online is no different. I also know that some instructors are better than others when it comes to replying. Be persistent and proactive.
Help desk
Technical trouble? Call the help desk 24/7 at (844) 214-6951. Be sure to get a ticket number to reference the issue with your instructor.
New Student Orientation
Since the system is new to all of us, it is important that all student do the New Student Orientation. It will take about 10 minutes and get you familiarized with the system.
Online tutoring
You have access to 15 free hours in Smarthinking, an online tutoring service. Submit any papers you write to them, so college professors can offer suggestions for improvement. You need to give them 24 hours turnaround time. Smarthinking is located under Course Home in your online course; it is embedded within you course and doe not require another password.

Please sign your name
I want to remind everyone, when e-mailing an instructor to please sign your e-mail and state in the message your class and section. There are so many students, classes and sections, this will help avoid confusion. In college communication be sure to keep the tone professional; at the very least, this means ending with a signature.
Don't cut and paste from the Internet
Southwestern is using Turnitin, plagiarism detection software. This means that if you cut and paste from the Internet the instructor can see exactly where passages came from. it also means that if a student from a previous term uses a paper a student has already turned in, that will be detected as well.

You need a computer and Internet access for online classes
This goes without saying, but be aware that Internet and computer access are your responsibility. You need a backup plan in case your Internet goes down or something goes wrong with your computer. This could be a friend's house, a relative, your local library or a computer lab at Southwestern.
Have a great term!
