Keeping our Brains Hydrated and our Bodies Fueled
We believe that children cannot learn if they are in physical discomfort and therefore students will be allowed to have a small snack when they are hungry. Items such as apples, grapes, bananas, muffins, etc. will be given the green light for "any time snacks". Other snacks, that require dip or spreads would be allowed only during our afternoon snack. A gentle reminder that we do have students with nut and egg allergies! Also, please send your child to school with a refillable water bottle. The bottles will be sent home on Fridays for disinfecting. Thanks!
What I Need - aka "WIN Block"
Each day; Monday through Thursday, students will be involved in an intervention or enrichment activity - depending upon their needs. During this time, your student may be working with adults other than us. Some of these adults include our librarian, Mrs. Jablonski, the reading or math interventionist and guidance. After our local assessments are complete, we will have a better understanding of what each of our students' needs. The WIN block will begin in October. During this time in September, we are busy building our team community, agreements, and routines. Please feel free to contact us via email with any questions you may have.

Math News
Students have begun to learn to play Cribbage! They are sharpening math skills by keeping score, and honing their social skills with cooperative, flexible thinking as well as using a growth mindset. If you know how to play and would like to volunteer during math class, please contact Mrs. Legris via email clegris@ewsd.org or (802) 879-6326 ext. 6316. Mrs. Legris' homeroom has math from 8:30-10:00 and Mrs. Savio's homeroom has math from 1:15-2:40. Thank You

CARES in our Classrooms
We spent the past week reading books and discussing characteristics which align with Responsive Classroom ideals. Students then discussed and developed working definitions for Cooperation, Assertiveness, Responsibility, Empathy, and Self Control. Our goal is to exhibit these characteristics throughout our day and re-visit them often. Take a look at the definitions...these teammates are deep thinkers!
Ear buds
Our school has some headphones that are shared amongst students, which are getting worn and uncomfortable. If your child still has the earbuds from SBAC testing last year, it would be wonderful if they could bring them in. There is also the consideration of hygiene when sharing equipment. Thanks for your help!
MUMS!
The orders for the fall plants should be returned to school by September 13, 2019. The plants will be at FMS for pick up on September 18. More information will follow concerning when and where to pick up.
Writers are Thinkers. Readers are Writers.
Students have spent the last several days exploring the natural link between reading and writing. We have read mentor texts in order to develop our CARES definitions and also to examine the writer's craft. Literacy in our classroom follows a workshop model, where students are given a mini-lesson, an opportunity to try the skill in whole class, partners and finally independent. I have taken many reading and writing classes led by trainers from Teachers College Reading and Writing Project and continue to develop my teaching skills. I have found, from experience that students who are immersed in language, via reading, writing and word study are eager to try new skills. I am so excited to begin our work together.
