For Heaven's Sake
May 2017
From the Principal's Desk
We have reached the end of another school year. As with all school years it has been full of excitement, joy, many events, and also some struggles, but through our faith we believe that God has been right beside us, guiding and leading us. Our children have grown and appear to have flourished this school year. The 5th grade band has improved so much with the increased in scheduled time. The symposium reflected OLQHS’s belief in developing leadership among the students. The Talent Show was a reflection of the many gifted children we have here and how they are allowed to develop and share their talents. The 4th grade and 5th grade choir demonstrated how accomplished they are by receiving superior ratings in the state competition. I am so proud of our children, they are amazing!
May you all have a wonderful, blessed summer. A time of rest and renewal!

The Art World
There are even more students to congratulate for achieving Artsonia's Hall of Fame. In First Grade we have Jonathan Braud and in Second Grade we have Luca Genuis. Third Grade has four new members--Asa Listi, Cara Henry, Drake Hinton, and Miles Ragusa. Our new Fourth Grader is Finn Gage, and we have two new Fifth Graders--Tanner Hamilton and Jack Lefort. And last, but not least, our new Seventh Grader in the Hall of Fame is Luke Courville. Congratulations to everyone!
In Kindergarten we drew and colored some wonderful Pirate's Parrots for Contraband Days while the First Graders drew and colored the notorious pirate "Fleabane" ARRGH! Second Grade has made beautiful symmetrical butterflies out of construction paper, tissue paper, and wax paper. They grouped these with the woven Easter Egg to decorate the Second Grade hallway and it is magnificent. Please go check it out.
Third Graders are finishing up their Name Aliens. They doubled their name written in cursive and turned it into an Alien. They are fantastic. They have also been completing their complex patterns and doing a great job. Fourth Graders are working like mad men to complete their Picasso Portraits in cray pas. They are wonderful.
Both Fifth and Seventh Graders made striking Zentangles which decorate the Fine Arts Hallway. Fifth Graders are now working on colorful Gecko Lizards in cray pas, while the Seventh Graders are working on their under-the-sea pictures. My Middle School students (all my students) are wonderfully talented. Please go to Artsonia and comment on their work.
If you are looking for a wonderful end of the school year present for your student, please consider the Artsonia Portfolio (around $32) which can include up to 20 pages of your child's artwork for the year or a great graduation gift of all their art from OLQH. Remember, the Art Department gets 20% of every sale.
Goodbye until next year. Remember to encourage their creativity during the summer. Have them take a class in art, set aside a spot in the house where....THEY CAN BE CREATIVE, MAKE MESSES, AND HAVE FUN!!!
Brenda Foshee, Art Teacher

P.E. News!
The OLQH Athletic teams had another outstanding year and we couldn’t have done it without all the volunteer coaches. The Barons football team had another good year placing second in the CCAL League standing. The 7th grade and 8th grade Volleyball teams worked hard throughout the season with the 8th grade team finishing third in CCAL Tournament play. In Basketball, the 5th grade boys and 5th grade girls teams begin playing their first season with the school. The 5th grade boys’ team finished second in CCAL League play with only one loss. The 6th grade girls team had only one loss and finished second, while the 6th grade boys placed first in CCAL League play. The 7th grade boys’ basketball team had a great season placing second in the CCAL League play. The 8th grade boys team finished third in their CCAL League play. In track, the OLQH 5th-6th boys and the 5th-6th grade girls won first place at the CCAL League track meet held at LC Boston Stadium. The 7th-8th girls placed fourth at the meet and the 7th-8th grade boys placed first, taking home the championship of the CCAL track meet for the fourth year in a row. In the Physical Education classes, the 6th-8th grades boys and girls participated in the Presidential/Physical Best Fitness Course Challenge. This Fitness Challenge test shows the improvements of his/her upper body strength and cardiovascular endurance. The students were charted measuring the number of times he/she performed or ran a fitness challenge. Each of the following activities were measured and charted: step ups, even bars, horizontal ladder, sit ups, pull ups, vault bar, pole climb, parallel bars and a timed run in the shuttle run and one mile or ½ mile. Those students that scored on or above the National Average Standard for all of the fitness activities received a Presidential Fitness Award Patch. Live It! Step With It / Fit It In Health Challenge. In the Physical Education classes, the third, fourth and fifth grade boys and girls participated in the President’s Campaign for a healthier United States. Each student was given a Stepometer in P.E. that counted each step taken daily by the students. A Personal Tracking chart was used to record for ten days the number of active steps by each student. Many students would reach their goal of 2000 steps in P.E. class, which was equaled to walking a mile.

asbestos statement
Each year parents must be informed that the school has complied with all national standards regarding asbestos on campus. Certain vinyl floors and the panels that are below the quad windows will have to be handled appropriately if ever replaced. Our report indicates that existing asbestos is in good condition and we have the highest rating given. You are welcome to examine the asbestos file in the office if desired.
