Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
At Julian Curtiss, we teach our students to follow our norm of "Care for Self and Others." Dr. King's ideals of fairness, kindness, respect, and courage, are ones that we foster within our young people. In our diverse community, we strive to live these ideals each and every day.
How to Tell Kids Why We Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Enjoy the long weekend, and we'll see you back at school on Tuesday!
Respect at Julian Curtiss
Based on feedback from our Panorama survey, as well as discussions with our staff and students, Julian Curtiss has been focused on respect as a school community this year.
We are working on respect through our five established district norms - Be Here, Be Safe, Be Honest, Care for Self and Others, and Let Go and Move On. Students are learning about and discussing examples of respect that relate to each norm. Our Safe School Climate Committee has been working hard this year to provide students with learning experiences to support respect including activities and assemblies where we gather as a school. We have also instituted a monthly Respect Award where one student from each class is recognized for consistently demonstrating the norms and showing respect toward their peers and school adults.
Ensuring that children treat both their peers and adults with respect is important in building relationships where everyone feels safe, trusted, and valued. Respect is not something automatic, it is learned. Although we teach and expect respect at school, we also ask for your support at home. Below is an excellent article with some concrete strategies to use at home with your child.

From our Nurse - Joann Concepcion
We have started the season for Influenza and are asking parents for their help as the Public Health School Nurse along with the Department of Health participate in the State of Connecticut Influenza Surveillance program. When calling your child out sick, please indicate the presence of flu-like symptoms:
Sudden onset of fever (over 100 F or 37.7 C)
Cough and/ or sore throat
Headaches and/ or body aches
Fatigue
If your child tests positive for Influenza, we follow the guideline that states to keep your child home a minimum of 5 days after diagnosis and to bring in a doctor’s note.
It is part of the medication policy that elementary students are not given cough drops without an MD order. NO lollipop cough drops are permitted. Gargling with salt water is an acceptable alternative.
Thank you for helping to keep all of our students and staff healthy this winter!

JC Students Change the World!
The JC Service Club is asking for your help in collecting donations for Mrs. Brush's upcoming trip to Bogotá over the February break. They have set a goal to raise $500. Service Club members will be collecting change at morning drop-off, and in the cafeteria from Tuesday, January 21st until Thursday, February 6th. A donation jar will also be available in the front hallway. The funds will help purchase things that the children need such as clothing, diapers, toothbrushes, and medical supplies.
For more information, or to find out about other ways to help, email Mrs. Brush at brenda_brush@greenwich.k12.ct.us.
Thank you in advance for your generosity!
Mrs. Brush, Ms. Stewart, Mr. O'Brien, and the JC Service Club
