Victor Junior High School
January 8, 2021
Dear Families,
We all hope you enjoyed the recent Holiday season. We’ve certainly enjoyed seeing the kids back at VJH this week. In a time of what feels like constant change and uncertainty, we take comfort in knowing that our teachers and staff at VJH provide consistency and safety for our students. As always, our teachers, counselors, and administrators are ready to support your children as they navigate the second half of this school year amidst a truly unique and potentially unsettling time in history.
I want thank those of you that participated in the recent VJH Building Council Thought Exchange. Our council met this week to review the effectiveness of a Thought Exchange to enhance our ability to engage with the community. We also began the process of looking at the ideas shared. We were thrilled with the engagement levels and turn out. We had over 130 participants share nearly 200 unique ideas. This month we will continue to unpack that work and determine the best ways to share ideas from the exchange. In the meantime, the council did decide to share some of the most highly rated ideas with VJH teacher leaders, staff, and administration for consideration as we plan for the second half of the school year.
In looking ahead, a few things to note.
- January 18th, Martin Luther King Day. *Note we will be asking Blue Cohort Students to attend a Gold Cohort Day via Zoom to account for the lost instructional day. More details to come.
- January 29th, Last day for students to submit work assigned between 12-14 and 1-22 without penalties.
- February 1st, start of second semester. New courses will be in the student schedule. These will be shared with students and will be available on School Tool.
- February 1st, shift to the four day instructional model, with students attending courses via Zoom on the days they were previously working independently. *Note a separate newsletter will be sent next week dedicated to this shift in practice.
Enjoy the upcoming weekend. For all of you winter enthusiasts, here’s to hoping for some snow on the horizon. I would also be remiss in not giving a shout out to all the Bills fans out there. It’s been a longtime in coming. Go Buffalo!
Sincerely,
Mr. Brian Gee
VJH Principal

MAP Testing
The Victor Central School District is committed to providing each learner high quality instruction through a rigorous curriculum. In order to meet the needs of all learners, we must measure achievement and growth toward learning outcome. We will do this by:
- Using the NWEA MAP Growth assessments in math and reading for students in grades 2-6 three times a year.
- Using the NWEA MAP Growth assessments in reading only for students in grades 7-8 three times a year.
During the months of January and February, students will engage in their second administration of the MAP Growth Test from NWEA on a computer or tablet. Please remember that MAP Growth tests are unique, and therefore adapt to your child’s responses to measure your child’s skill level. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. These results will provide a more complete picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below their grade level. This information will be used to help inform teachers of what learning standards need to be addressed and provide more focused instruction when needed.
Students are familiar with the NWEA/MAPS test since this is their second administration of the program. We are truly excited to focus on your child’s individual growth and achievement and look forward to using the data to inform and improve our instruction which will therefore improve student achievement and learning.
