A Hero Among Us: Ms. Mondy Jacques
By Audrey Gilbert
“I have six ingredients for success: Faith, Hard Work, Patience, Determination, Integrity, and a Positive Attitude,” says Frankfort Independent Schools’ very own Ms. Mondy.
In 1996, Raymonde Jacques and her son, Johnny, made their first trip to Haiti to start work on the Haitian Needy Children's Foundation. She has worked so hard for so long to help the children of the mountain towns Samadek, Sergain, and Tourette in Haiti get education and opportunities that they deserve.
Ms. Mondy comes from the Haitian town of Samadek. She lived there until she was 12 years old and then moved to the town of Port-au-Prince to live with her father. She worked in factories and at a military base after moving to Port-au-Prince. From there she worked for a French family to take care of their child. She went on to work in a doctor’s office, and then she moved to the United States to take care of Doug Riddle’s daughter Beth. She said that she did not come to America intending to work for the children of Haiti but she received a calling from God to do so.
She moved to America with her son Johnny when he was six years old as a single parent. Jacques and her son were supported by the Riddell family along with the Capital City Christian Church. She began working for Second Street in 1996 when she began her mission. She lost her her job at Second Street but did not give up on her goal. She worked for 80 to 100 hours a week, sometimes making only a dollar a day to support her family and her mission to help the children of Haiti.
The Tidwell family, of Second Street School, started to save and donate money that would help Ms. Mondy and her goal of helping the children of Haiti. Former Principal, Travis Harley, also helped by having the teachers and students of Second Street raise money for her. Capital City Christian Church also has helped her raise money to got to Haiti and build schools and libraries.
She has built three schools in Haiti so far. Unfortunately, two of these schools have had to shut down due to lack of funding. The school in Samamdek still in use and has roughly 400 students and 20 teachers there. So many children are receiving new opportunities because of her work.
Her next goal is to build a medical center. The towns of Samadek, Sergain, and Tourette don’t have a hospital close enough to them to get effective use out of. When someone has a sick child or has had a medical emergency, they don’t always make it to the hospital in time. By building a medical center, she wants to help the people in these towns get better medical care, which will lead to more opportunities for them later.
Building this medical center is going to take a lot of funding. Ms. Mondy is asking for schools, churches, businesses, and any other organization that is willing to help to donate money to help the Haitian Needy Children’s Foundation. She is knows that people cannot feel her pain, but if they can understand the needs of the children in Haiti they will want to help. She believes that if “Everyone said ‘We want to do something’ then something will be done”.
If you want to support Ms. Mondy's mission, the Haitian Needy Children’s Foundation, you can reach out to them at (502)-352-2971 or at 236 E. Main Street. You can also like their Facebook page (Haitian Needy Children’s Foundation).

Exact Path is not for Everyone
by Ethan R.
Exact Path. Exact Path has its ups and downs. Teachers do challenges with it, like where you get a gift card or pizza at lunch. Then you also have Exact Path Lab which is absolutely TERRIBLE! Especially if you got sent there for something you didn’t do. It’s insane what schools do for punishment these days, but Exact Path lab is the absolute worst. I know there is worse punishments than Exact Path, but hear me out.
Exact Path is a learning website for students. Teachers post assignments on it and students do them. Every semester, you take a diagnostic quiz on each subject of your classes ( Math, Reading, etc.) This determines what lessons you have on your learning path. This might sound like a pretty good system, but I swear Satan is somewhere deep within Exact Path. Sitting on a website with nothing else to do but lessons, lessons, lessons for hours and hours is a kid’s WORST nightmare. This is why they have Exact Path Lab. SRT knows kids hate Exact Path and that’s why they put it as a punishment. Is just me or is that just plain cruelty.
Sitting in a isolated room downstairs, with people you don’t know, doing something you don’t want to do. That my friend is just evil. Exact Path might be a good way for kids to learn, but at least give students like a game to do after they complete a full lesson set on their learning path. JEEZ!
I have to admit, Exact Path Lab is a good punishment. It teaches kids a lesson and makes them never want to go back there again. Exact Path isn’t all that bad as long as you’re not on it for more than 30 minutes. Exact Path Lab might be one out few good punishments at our school. But it’s probably because Satan is hiding somewhere in that echoing room down there though.
2019 Gubernatorial Election
by Rebecca V.
2019 is an important year in Kentucky politics. Most of the executive branch is up for reelection including the Governor, the Secretary of State, the Attorney General, the Commissioner of Agriculture, the Auditor of Public Accounts, and the State Treasurer. The current Secretary of State (Alison Lundergan Grimes) has posted sample ballots to her website. Find the Republican and Democratic Primary Ballots HERE. Vote in our poll here.
Primary election day is this upcoming Tuesday (we get a half day!) and Republicans and Democrats across the state will get a chance to vote on who represents their party in the general election come November. The gubernatorial elections will likely be the closest watch, although I’ll be keeping an eye out for the Secretary of State elections as well.
The Republicans have four candidates for governor, Robert Goforth (Lieutenant: Michael Hogan); Ike Lawrence (Lieutenant: James Anthony Rose); William Woods (Lieutenant: Justin Miller); Matthew Bevin (Lieutenant: Ralph Alvarado).
The Democrats also have four candidates, Andy Beshear: (Lieutenant: Jacqueline Coleman); Adam Edelen (Lieutenant: Gill Holland); Geoffrey Young (Lieutenant: Joshua French); Rocky Adkins (Lieutenant: Stephanie Horne).
Matt Bevin is expected to win the Republican primary, as he is the most recognizable name of the bunch, and has experience, whereas the Democratic primary is a bit more difficult to determine. In early April, Beshear had a lead, but Adkins has a decent chance of winning as well, and Edelen has made a name for himself as a part of the competition too.
Rocky Adkins has had a good campaign, and he already had some name recognition with his position in the Kentucky House, but Beshear already had a huge amount of name recognition between his current position as attorney general and his father, who was governor prior to Bevin. Edelen has a political history, being the Kentucky Auditor of Public Accounts from 2012-2016, but doesn’t have the same name recognition as Beshear and Adkins. However, he’s done a good job with his campaign, giving him a shot at the Democratic nomination.
Please encourage your parents to vote in the upcoming primaries and in the general election in November. These elections will be an interesting one, not just for the state of Kentucky but for America, as the outcome will affect the presidential elections.

Brace for Impact Final Installment
by Eli C. and Jack G.
Gage and Edvin translated the buttons in their mind and begin the countdown of 5 minutes for the rocket to blast off. The ceiling opened up and they got ready to climb in. They heard the crashing and banging of the screeching creature trying to find them. It had taken them a minute to get in so four minutes remained. Once inside and shut in they realized they had no knowledge of the spacecraft.
“Is there a manual in here?” Gage asked. Edvin looked in different storage compartments as different lights blinked blue and green. He pulled out a booklet with very soft paper, in a runic alphabet.
“There’s a problem, Gage,” Edvin noticed. He flipped through the pages. 3 minutes were left until liftoff.
“Shoot,” Gage whispered. He looked at all the switches.
“I say we flip the ones with lights on and see what happens,” Gage concluded. Edvin let out a sigh. There were 2 minutes and 27 seconds left. Edvin flipped all the switches and Gage flipped the switches on his side. The creature screeched loudly terrifyingly. With 1 minute left until take-off the door they shut and locked, began to get pounded on. There were 30 seconds left Then 15 seconds left, and they were still pressing buttons and flipping switches. The creature knocked down the door. It flew around the room trying to find a weak spot on the rocket to attack. When the timer hit zero it tried to attack, but the ship launched and they got into space and started heading home.
Dear Miss Helping Hands
Dear Miss Helping Hands,
I have nothing to do this summer and I fear boredom, what are some things I could do over the summer to prevent this.
Dear Fearful,
I suggest reading a good book or two over the summer. When you find a good book sometimes you never want to put it down so it is always good to read a book over summer. Also, binge-watch a show on Netflix or any other streaming service. Netflix has shows and movies for everyone and it is always fun to watch Netflix. Maybe plan to go to an amusement park or the pool with your friends over the summer. Even if you can’t go on a vacation you can take a fun day trip with people close to you and have so much fun. Going to the pool or an amusement park is very fun for me and many other people and I recommend it.
The Voice on NBC
by Sam G.
NBC’s The Voice is on its way to the finale. With four contestants left, the series is coming to an end. Some of the season’s best singers have already been cut off. For example, four chair Matthew Johnson (Soul/R&B) lost in the top 24 and was on Team Legend and Team Kelly. Another Team Legend four chair, Shawn Sounds (Soul/R&B) recently lost in the top eight. As well as Celia Babini (Pop, four chairs, Team Adam and Team Legend) who lost in the top 13. Rod Stokes (Country) was on Team Adam, Blake, and Kelly and made to the top 8. Oliv Blu (Pop and R&B) lost in the top 13 and was on Team Legend and then Team Blake. America ended up loving Team Blake. After the Cross Battles, Blake had the highest amount of people on his team with 8. And then after the top 24, 6. Then in the top 13 when Team Adam was completely out, he had 5 people going into the top 8. Now in the top 4, he has 3 of the four contestants on his team. Andrew Sevener (Country, one chair), Gyth Rigdon (Country and Rock, three chairs) and Dexter Roberts (Country, four chairs). The one other person, Maelyn Jarmon, Team Legend. Voting will be on Monday night, vote for who you want to win The Voice.

Frankfort Middle School Track and Field
by Jaleia H.
This year’s Frankfort Middle Track and Field team had a tremendous season. All of our athletes worked hard and did their best at every meet. From our teammates who throw and do long jump, to the ones that run the 2-mile run, the team made amazing leaps including our Middle School girls becoming County Champions against Elkhorn and Bondurant. We also have many runners planning on competing in the state track meet. We wish them luck! Our season has recently come to a close but there are definitely many people who have the potential to become great runners. It is our hope that the Frankfort track team will continue to grow and represent our school well.
Game Review: FIFA mobile
by Anthony P.
If I were to rate this game I would give it a 7/10 the reason is. FIFA mobile is a fun new addition to the FIFA game series but this one is released on mobile. The game starts out with you having a bad character but the more you play the better your character, you can also upgrade your characters with coins and XP. The way you can get coins and XP is missions and quests. The way you can get new characters is by doing missions or spending gems or coins on FIFA packs which will give you other bonuses.
I would recommend this game to anyone with an iPhone due to how fun it can be, and plus this game is a great time killer and you have many possibilities. If you’re a soccer fan you’ll love it.
