October is not only National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, butis also National Healthy Lung Month. It is important to educate your children on the importance of keeping their lungs as healthy as possible and ways to protect their lungs. One of the ways parents can help kids' lungs stay healthy is by teaching them the dangers of vaping and smoking. Tobacco manufacturers market a variety of vape flavors to kids as a way to make kids lifetime customers.
Vaping is the inhalation of vapor from an e-cigarette or "vape". Vapes can contain marijuana or nicotine. The effects of vaping include anxiety and depression, addiction, cancer, chronic bronchitis, sleep problems, life-threatening lung damage , and increased likelihood of smoking in the future. Nicotine also affects brain development, making it harder to learn and concentrate. Some changes in brain development are permanent and can affect mood and impulse control as an adult.
Some of the ways to quit vaping/smoking are listed below:
- Get rid of all vaping/smoking devices.
- Pick a day you want to quit and let family know so that you can be supported.
- Decide why you want to quit and write it down or put it in your phone and look at it each time you get the urge to vape/smoke.
- Use tools such as This is Quitting or text DITCHVAPE to 88709 for free help and tools for parents.
- Utilize free apps and tools from Smokefree.gov.

Mrs. McBride
This week for the Teacher Feature, we met with Mrs. McBride, who teaches both standard and dual credit US History, swimming, and lifeguarding here at Seeger.
Curious about what Mrs. McBride enjoys teaching, we posed a hypothetical situation to Mrs. McBride. If she could teach a class about absolutely anything, what would it be like? She described a class based on the historical research process. In this class, students would select a historical topic of their own interest, develop a research question for said topic, and research it as deeply as possible throughout the course of the semester.
When asked if she had any book recommendations for us, Mrs. McBride stated that there were “too many to count” and pointed us toward her current read, The Devil in the White City. It’s a nonfiction narrative by Erik Larson about the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.
We wrapped up the interview by asking her what famous historical figure she’d want on her team in a zombie apocalypse. Mrs. McBride admitted that it was a tough choice, caught between George Washington, “for his leadership and tactical training,” and Theodore Roosevelt, “for his knowledge of the land and survivalist skills.”
Here are some more fun facts about Mrs. McBride!
Abigail Garrison
Abigail Garrison is this week's Student of the Week chosen, by Mrs. Smith.
Mrs. Smith tells about what she looks for when nominating a student for Student of the Week.
“I look for a student who has been working hard, following directions, and comes to class prepared.”
Mrs. Smith also tells about what Abigail does well in her class.
“Abigail does a great job of using her time wisely. She doesn't need reminders about her device needing charged, having a pencil, or what the assignment is.”
Mrs. Smith tells about Abigail’s best qualities.
“One of Abigail's best qualities is her positive attitude. She works hard and puts forth great effort.”
I talked to Abigail and she told me about her favorite part of Mrs. Smith’s class.
“My favorite part of being in Mrs. Smith's class is we get to play fun and educational games.”
Abigail also told be how it feels to be Student of the Week
“It feels really weird to be Student of The Week, but I am really grateful.”
Congratulations to Abigail and good luck to anyone wanting to be Student of the Week.

Cross Country--2023 Boys' and Girls' WRC Champs
The Boys and Girls Cross Country teams BOTH advanced to the Regionals from a very tough Sectionals!
On the Girl's side, Hadessah Austin led the way by winning the meet by 38 seconds!! Caleigh Purcell and Adara Austin also placed in the top 10, while Hayden Frodge and Emily Greene both finished on the top 20! As a team, they beat everyone but Harrison and were the Sectional Runner-Ups!
On the Boys' side, Ethan Guminski and Nathan Odle placed in the top 10 to help lead the fight! It was a close battle for the last two spots to advance to Regionals, and the Boys barely squeaked by perennial powerhouse McCutcheon for the 5th place team finish!! Big races by all 5 Boys (which include Jack Puterbaugh, Konner Brenner, and Landon Dispennett) allowed them to move on!
Next week's Regionals will have 250 runners fighting to get to State, as the SemiState no longer exists in Indiana!
They will race at 10:30 and 11:15 at Brownsburg East Middle School next Saturday!
Football
The Seeger football team finishes the regular at 6-3 after a tough loss to North vermillion on Friday 26-0 in a muddy battle. The Patriots finish 3rd in the WRC standings sharing the spot with FC. Seeger is now 0-0 to start the post-season, which is the mentality the coaching staff and players are taking. Benton Central travels to Seeger Friday October 20. Seeger beat BC earlier this season 49-28. Please come out to support the boys and they look to make a run deep into the post-season in route to a Sectional title.
