Region 4 Migrant Education News
Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow: Building Momentum in Migrant Education
- Many activities keep our staff engaged with students and families right now! Peter Balonon-Rosen of the Indiana Public Broadcasting service made another visit to our region this spring to spend a day with Alex Rodriguez, our recruiter. This story was shared through Indiana’s public radio broadcasting and on the State Impact website. Here is the link to that story where you can learn more about how Indiana’s recruiters meet our families and students when they arrive in our region for work: How Indiana Tracks Down and Educates Migrant Children and Workers
- Mr. Charles Harris has been hired as our part-time Family Resource Specialist. His main roles include completing needs assessments with families, connecting families to community resources in their area, and helping to establish a Family Resource Center to be open in the evening one day each week. He is currently meeting our families and assisting with sign-ups for our summer school program.
- Teachers for our summer school program participated in a two-day STEM Summit for migrant teachers from around the state in May. The Summit focused on skills with technology and learning strategies specific to our unique population of students. This training leads our teachers to a better understanding of families and the engaging instructional tools they will utilize during the summer program.
- In March, we took a group of students to the Indiana Latino Leadership Conference at Depauw University. Students from all over Indiana were able to meet, participate in educational sessions about topics of interest, and gain leadership strategies.

Writing, Writing, Writing...
Is your school struggling with how to help your students become proficient writers?
The Writer's Workshop model is considered a research-based best practice in instruction and learning. It provides modeling through mentor texts, guided practice, and leads to application in students' authentic writing. The model honors student choice and collaboration with both peers and the teachers. It fosters differentiation in order to meet the learning needs of all students. Students who are engaged in the workshop model are actively learning the content and skills they need to master, and then applying it to their own work. The engagement and ownership embedded in the model result in strong learning with a lasting impact. Director of Educator Support Julie Monetta has experience with the Writing Workshop model at the primary, intermediate, and secondary levels. She would love to work with your educators to adopt this approach through on-site workshops, onsite training, and/or coaching.
Contact Julie at the SIEC if you would like to explore how this could best work for your corporation.

SIEC Starlab Scheduling 2017/18
Is your school interested in borrowing a Starlab portable planetarium from the SIEC during the 2017-18 school year? The SIEC has three Starlab portable planetariums available for loan to member schools. Starlab provides a unique learning environment for all grade levels on topics such as astronomy, mythology, geography, and more. A Starlab scheduling email was sent to principals and to Starlab educators in early May. Contact Amy at the SIEC if you would like a copy of this information.
To enter your scheduling choices for 2017-18 in advance, click here for the online form: http://goo.gl/5V5W39. You are also welcome to contact the SIEC next school year to schedule. You would then choose from the remaining available dates.
Here are some recent quotes from 6th graders:
Eli- Starlab is amazing; it lets you step through time and space and lets us feel like we can do anything.
Cezar- In Starlab I find unique features, a new world, like if I was looking down at Earth from the stars.
Caleb- When you walk into Starlab you feel like an astronaut jumping from star to star.
Daybria- Starlab is an amazing experience because it's like you can see the whole galaxy from just one spot. I LOVE Starlab!
Brynna- If your life wasn't already out of this world, it will be in Starlab!
Skylar- I think Starlab changed me because when we got Starlab, I had the time of my life. It changed me so much that it felt like I was in a dream of science and knowledge.
Emily- Starlab was awesome; it actually feels like you're in outer space, and it feels like your actually spinning.
Reid- Going in to Starlab is like entering a new universe.
Molly- When you are in Starlab you feel relaxed, like you are actually looking at the mesmerizing sky. I usually find constellations hard to find, but now I've spotted Orion many times.
Thanks to Valerie Schoppenhorst at Washington Catholic Middle School for sharing these quotes!
