Mrs. Overfield and Mrs. Hickoff, Secretaries
From the Desk of Mr. Tiemann
State Road Elementary is VERY EXCITED to announce that we are a partner school with The Positivity Project! The Positivity Project (P2) is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to helping America’s youth build stronger relationships by recognizing the character strengths in themselves and others. Our vision is to create citizens and leaders who will enhance our communities and country by internalizing the belief that “Other People Matter.”
Each week State Road Elementary will focus on one of 24 different character strengths. Each morning students may talk about the weekly character strength, watch a short video, write a journal reflection, or create a small project related to that week's strength! The link below will take you to our weekly calendar of character strengths in hope that you will continue these valuable conversations at home as well.
This week we are talking about why "Other People Matter" which is the P2 motto! Some questions you can use to help start a conversation at home include:
What does the motto "Other People Matter" mean to you?
How have you seen people build strong relationships?
What would it look like to live with the mindset that “Other People Matter”?
Next week (Sept. 17-23) we will focus on the Character Strength of Curiosity! Curiosity means you like exploration and discovery. You ask lots of questions because you want to learn about anything and everything. Some questions you can use for Curiosity include:
Why is this strength important?
How do I use this strength?
How do other people use this strength?

Attendance Awareness Month
Did you know that children can suffer academically if they miss 10 percent of the school year? That’s just 18 days or 2 to 3 days a month. And that can add up before you know it. This September State Road Elementary is celebrating Attendance Awareness Month with a renewed push to get all kids to school—on time, every day. Research shows us that absences add up. That’s as true for kindergartners as it is for 12th graders. It’s as true for excused absences as it is for skipping school.
We know there will be days when your child will miss school, especially when they’re sick. But we know that nationwide, as many as 7.5 million students miss 10 percent of the school year. That’s 135 million days of missed school – and missed opportunities. And research shows us it also marks the point when students start to fall behind academically because they have missed too many days.
So this September, for Attendance Awareness Month, let’s work together as a community –– to get all kids to school – on time, every day.
Michigan Teacher of the Year!
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is asking educators, administrators, students, and parents to help it find the next Michigan Teacher of the Year (MTOY). The Michigan Teacher of the Year program, sponsored by the Meemic Foundation, recognizes outstanding educational leaders across Michigan for their work to elevate the teaching profession.
Michigan Teachers of the Year have been recognized since 1952. This Michigan honor is part of the preeminent state- and nationally-recognized teacher recognition program in states across the country.
“Great teachers are found in every school in our state,” said State Superintendent Brian Whiston. “The Michigan Teacher of the Year program has honored outstanding Michigan educators for decades and is the one enduring tribute to this important profession.”
MDE’s online nomination form is open until Friday, October 20 at 11:59 p.m., for people to nominate a teacher or teachers whom they feel are exceptional educators and have made substantial contributions to their profession.

Lice Prevention!
We all need to take preventative measures and educate ourselves and our children on how to prevent the spread of lice. Children should not share combs, hats (including ball caps at sporting events), pillows (at sleepovers), or coats/jackets (especially with hoods).
Children should not 'touch heads' while sitting close to a friend. Children/girls with long hair can keep it pulled back in a ponytail or braids, and spritzed with hairspray and/or tea tree oil. Please also refer to the lice prevention & treatment information found on our website (click the link below):

NEWS FROM OUR PTO!
VG’s Receipts
Please make sure you are turning in your VG’s receipts to your child’s teacher or the box near the main office. Remember to turn in the whole receipt and label the bag with the teacher’s name so that your child’s class gets credit for every receipt turned in.
PTO Meeting
Our next meeting will be October 10 at 9:00am in the library. All parents/guardians of children at State Road are more than welcome to come. We would love to hear your thoughts on things we can do!

Please Help Prevent the Spread of Sickness, Head Lice, etc...
Parents: We have had several reported cases of Colds with fevers over the past week. The best way to prevent the spread of sickness, communicable diseases, or issues such as head lice is to take preventative steps at home prior to sending your child to school. Please also contact the office right away to let us know of any sickness or confirmed case of lice that your child may have. For more ‘health’ related information, please visit the State Road website and select “Student Health Info” under the Information Tab. Thank you!
Please visit the "Student Health Information" section of our website (link below) for more information!
