I BELIEVE you matter!!
I Believe in Living Above the Line
We believe in you matter, we believe in relationships, and we believe in helping others be successful. This month, our focus puts what we have learned into practice in living above the line. Top 20s are aware of their thinking and live above the line. We believe in rule #3: Follow the three R's: Respect for self, Respect for others, Responsibility for all your actions. We recognize our indicators, the feelings we have or the behaviors we exhibit when we are Below the Line, and change our thinking to work in our own and our students' best interests. What if we find ourselves Below the Line? Working back Above the line, as noted by Top 20 authors, may mean handling those experiences in submarine fashion, with grace and dignity. In a submarine we have ample air, are protected from outside sharks and outside sharks are protected from us. This environment allows us to reflect upon the situation and handle situations differently, abiding by Dalai Lama's Rule #10: Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. My favorite rule: #11, the epitome of living Above the Line as it lies within these simple words: Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time. This week, I challenge you to select your favorite rule. Apply it to your daily life. Reflect upon the impact of its fruition on your life and the lives of those around you.
RICHMOND RECOGNITION
To our students and staff for honoring our Veterans with your artistry, writing, and in display of respect during our program Thursday, thank you for making a difference today to create a better tomorrow!
First 6 Weeks: Maintenance
The first six weeks of school were focused on establishing rituals and routines for our school. We will continue to teach and practice these behaviors throughout the school year. We also focus on community and relationship building as we know that no significant learning happens without a significant relationship. Building relationships assists in student engagement. Learn more about boosting student engagement through varied resources, student choice, real-world concepts, and differentiated learning in the infographic found here: eSparkLEARNING.
Reading is Our Super Power!
As we work toward achieving our WBWF Reading Goals, let's focus this week on Motivating Readers with Authentic Texts, the title of a reading webinar I participated in earlier this week. I learned methods to bring authenticity and relevancy to our students through texts that involve current events, addressing relevant events that are happening right now. Common Sense Media reports that in the past 30 years, schools have seen a drop in the number of students who enjoy reading. In 1984, eight percent of 13 year-olds reported that they “never” read for fun. As of 2012, this number tripled, and 24% of students report that they never voluntarily read during their leisure time. 53% of 9-year-olds read for fun every day, while only 19% of 17 year-olds report the same. The question is: How can we motivate our students to read informational text?
Students can be engaged by addressing an issue that is impacting our community; addressing a topic that is important to students also creates buy in. We know what our students are interested in; this is a great way to make reading relevant! Treating informational texts like literature and allowing time for reflection and discussion of what is read creates a love of learning for varied texts. Look for and read culturally inclusive texts, which drive engagement, outcomes, and showcase different points of views and ways of thinking. This can be achieved with use of current media, focusing on identity to open the sharing door, and allowing students to help choose focus texts and rate them post-reading.
