MATH Update
Hello All! Can’t believe it is already March! With that being said we are wrapping up our last fraction concepts and will have our second assessment this week. Before we get away for spring break we will briefly introduce our next unit which will cover measurement. We will go over basic concepts of perimeter and measurement of time which will finish out the end of this week.
Once we return from a much needed spring break we will jump right back into measurement distinguishing the difference between measurement units within the customary and metric system. We will have plenty of time to identify the different units and also be able to apply that knowledge with comparisons and unit conversions.
If you have not already heard Carter Phillips arrived Feb 18th! Mrs. Meadors took over my class and has been able to jump into our routines very smoothly. I am comforted knowing just how well she is taking care of your child while I am gone. If you should have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact her through my school email ( lphillips@csisd.org).
Thank you!
Mrs. Phillips
READING/WRITING Update
From Mrs. Dungan:
ELA
Book clubs start after Spring Break. They really like the opportunity to discuss with others the books they are reading.
Make sure your student keeps reading and writing over Spring Break.
Check out the movie on Netflix, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. Great biographical story of a science minded boy. I have the book in my class library, but it is a middle school reading level.
Weekly homework - Read 120 minutes each week.
Any late or missing assignments must be turned in no later than March 8.
Check Schoology for class updates.
PARENT OPPORTUNITIES:
Help facilitate a book club discussion. Time commitment 20-30 minutes.
Attend Awards Assembly, March 22 at 9:15, or if you can’t make it, email me something you are celebrating. I will share it with students in class.
Read a favorite chapter book with your child(ren) before bed every night.
March 29 - Decorate my door to look like students are entering a tent to prepare for Writing “CAMP” the following week
SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES Update
In Social Studies:
During the next three weeks we will look at Texas during the Civil war. How the Texas frontier developed with ranching cattle and the impact railroads had on life in Texas. Students will also begin looking at the free enterprise system in Texas.
**WEEKLY QUIZZES** - encourage your student to participate in class and review the key vocabulary that is on the webpage. If you see that your student is scoring below an 80 each week on their weekly quiz, please check with me and see when they can come in for tutorials so we can make sure they are understanding what we are covering in class.
In Science,
After our planetarium/enrichment day activity my students were so excited and invested in their rocket designs for NASA that I just had to let them finish and then present and analyze the process so we are a smidge behind what I sent out last month. This week we will get back on track looking at weathering, erosion, and deposition. Then apply that knowledge gained to the formation of soil.
As a reminder, Encourage your child to review the vocabulary on the website.
