A thought or two from Mr. Nieslanik
Southridge High School is hosting two students and the Principal from our sister school, St. Andrews, in Matale, Uganda. We have been working with St. Andrews School for 18 years. Not only do we send financial support to the school through fundraising, but also participate in a cultural exchange of ideas and students. We have had a wonderful time learning about education and life in Matale, Uganda, and at the same time they have been learning about Southridge High School. I wanted to share a couple observations about our school made by our visiting Principal:
- Our students are engaged and leaning into their learning.
- Our teaches are so good and work with all students
- Our school is so clean and organized
- Our staff and students are so nice and welcoming
- She has enjoyed being in physics, English Language Development, Social Studies and Dual Language Math to name a few.
Until next time,
David
Judith Naluyima, Principal of St. Andrews Matale, Uganda
Principal Nieslanik and his family gave Principal Judith her first look at the ocean. The tide was out and she got to see tide pools, walk in the sand and experience an unusually pleasant February day at the beach! She tried some seafood and pizza. "I will be doing pizza again," she said.
Katushabe Allen
Allen is 14 yrs old and is in Form Four, their grade level. She is known for her cultural dancing.
The students are staying with host families who are delighted to show them SRHS, their neighborhood and some of the NW.
They are attending classes during the day and after school they are riding bikes, exploring computer games, watching TV, and, the ever-popular, shopping.
Namakula Joan
Joan and Allen got to play in the snow at Mt. Hood, spent a day at Mountainside HS, attended a Blazer game, and went swimming for the first time at THPRD. The girls will be sharing dance steps with the SRHS students at the Cram the Cage dance.
During their stay, we have learned so much about each other, but the most interesting is how much we are alike!

Standard Response Protocol
The Beaverton School District and Southridge High School would like to express our deepest condolences to staff, students, families and community of Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. All students and staff in our nation’s schools deserve to feel safe while learning and teaching.
To ensure the safety and security of our students and staff, the Beaverton School District has full time personnel charged with overseeing and maintaining school safety. BSD has a strong partnership with the Washington County Sheriff's Office, the Beaverton Police Department and local emergency managers. Along with local law enforcement, BSD has implemented the Standard Response Protocol and the Standard Reunification Method. We encourage parents and community members to visit the BSD Public Safety webpage to familiarize themselves with these procedures.
School staff are always available to support students and their families, but knowing what to say at home with your own children can be challenging. Here is a good resource with helpful age-appropriate suggestions for healthy communication.
AP Exam Registration
AP exam registration for Southridge High School will be from Feb. 26 to March 9. During this time students can order and pay for exams through the business office. Payment for exams may be done by check (made out to Southridge HS) or cash to the business office, or using a Visa credit or debit card through the district online payment system. Cost is $68 per exam.
Fee reductions are possible for students on free or reduced lunch. Bring a copy of your Notification letter to the business office to apply for assistance.
More information will be distributed to students in AP classes in mid-February.
Local Option Levy Renewal
The Beaverton School Board on Monday, Jan. 22, unanimously adopted a resolution to place a five-year Local Option Levy Renewal on the May 15, 2018 ballot. This is a vote-by-mail election.
If approved, the Local Option Levy Renewal would allow Beaverton schools to preserve 300 teaching positions, maintain class sizes, and help ensure students are prepared for post-high school success. The levy renewal costs $1.25 per $1,000 assessed property value. Homes with the median assessed value of $238,000 would continue to pay less than $25 per month. The levy could raise approximately $31-$35 million a year.
In 2013, voters approved a five-year local option levy to restore teaching positions that had been cut due to repeated state funding shortfalls. The levy has raised $128 million, and 100% has remained in Beaverton schools to fund approximately 300 teaching positions and reduce class sizes. In the 2017-2018 school year, 158 of these positions were allocated to Beaverton's elementary schools, 53 to middle schools, 70 to high schools, and 18 to options schools.
Cold & Flu Season
Thank you for being considerate of other and minimizing the spread of colds and flu, and student and staff absences.
#1 Stay home if you are sick. No one wants to sit next to a sick person.
#2 Cough and sneeze into your elbow.
#3 Wash your hands often throughout the day.
#4 Be aware of what you share...you are contagious even before you know you are sick.
