Class of 2023 Requesting Courses
How to enter your course requests into PowerSchool
The recommended deadline for entering your requests is 7pm on Friday, April 3, 2020. The counselors are already working on next year's school schedule--the sooner you get done with your part, the sooner the counselors can help other grades.
Please read everything before starting; If you have questions after you submit your requests, feel free to contact one of your counselors.
Here are the instructions:
Step 1: Start with the end in mind...update your EDP and 4 year plan.
Students are encouraged to update their Educational Development Plan (EDP) on Career Cruising. If your EDP is not 100% complete, you can work on completing it. If your EDP is already complete, you can use this information to plan for your high school courses. This is a great starting point for your sophomore schedule.
Go to http://www.careercruising.com/login/CVS to login and begin!
Your Username is the prefix `CVS-` followed by your First Initial Last Name and the last 3 digits of your Student ID (e.g. CVS-JSMITH123)
Your password is your Student ID
Step 2: Review the info and download the CVHS Course Offering Book
Step 3: Log onto your PowerSchool portal and begin requesting courses
Log onto PowerSchool as you would if you intended to check your grades or attendance.
You will now be in the Course Registration Screen for the Class of 2023.
Carefully read the instructions at the top of the screen.
Read the descriptions from each section.
When you are ready, on the right-hand side of your screen you will see "pencil" icons. Click on those pencil icons to enter your requests.
You will be scheduling a total of 2 credits plus some back-up choices called Alternates.
If you had too many or two few selections, try again until you get it right. You can go over your selections multiple times.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Why can’t I select my English, Math, Science and Social Studies required courses?
Chippewa Valley Schools used a process that included multiple sources of data to assign students to some required courses. Recommendations from your teachers, results from your standardized tests like NWEA, and your grades go into determine the recommendations for required courses.
What if I want to make a change to the recommended English, Math, Science and Social Studies courses that were recommended for me?
If your parent approves, you can ask your counselor to make changes to the recommended courses. Just have your parent email your counselor to discuss.
I have these signed forms, what do I do with them now?
Use the Course Request form as a worksheet. If you have any other form you wanted to hand in, you can email your 10th-grade counselor the info/request.
I can’t find some of the Career Technical Education (CTE) courses I want to request?
Many of our CTE courses have space and capacity limits. Generally, the spaces are reserved for students that can complete the full programs. This generally means Junior students (11th grade). We also share some of the programs with Dakota High School which further limits the available space.
In you are interested in one of these courses we ask that you list your request in the Alternative section of the Student Request Form. If there is room, we will honor that request.
Here are the courses that historically have space limitations for Sophomores (10th grade):
Auto Technology 1A/1B
Construction Trades 1A/1B (at DHS)
Culinary Arts 1A/1B (at DHS)
Marketing I/II
Woodworking I/II (at DHS)
What about AP European History, I don’t see it in my available course options?
AP European History is an elective course and does not meet the US History graduation requirement. When your counselor knows that you are requesting this course, you will be added to the course request list. You can email your 10/12 counselor with your intention. We will remove the US History course that was added automatically to your course list. You will have to take US History or AP US History in 11th or 12th grades, if you elect to take AP European History.
Contact your counselor with questions by email; you are encouraged to reach out to your new counselor in the 10/12 building, too.
