Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
September 4th-8th
What's Going On This Week:
- Science: On Wednesday students will take a quiz over process skills, scientific tools, safety rules, and qualitative and quantitative observations. On Thursday, we will start our first big science unit on Light and Sound. Lesson 1 will cover artificial and natural light, as well as the properties of light.
- Social Studies: In Social Studies, students will finish learning about different groups of Native Americans. They will be given a study guide for their unit test on Land Bridge and First Americans on Wednesday. The unit test will be Friday, September 15th. Their totem pole projects are due on Friday, September 8th.
- Mrs. Thurston's ELA/Math:This week we are continuing our first unit, Interpreting Characters: The Heart of the Story, and diving deep into studying characters. We will continue learning how to establish a reading life while reading our new novel, Tiger Rising. We will also start discussing character traits and story elements. In writing, we are continuing our Realistic Fiction/Narrative unit by creating and developing stories and characters that feel real. They are developing some awesome narratives! This week in math we will be rounding to the nearest millions place and taking a quiz on Friday. Students should be taking home their notebooks every night to review concepts taught in class.
- Ms. Harris' GT ELA/Math: This week we will be rounding in math. Students will have a quiz on Friday over rounding to the millions place. In ELA, we won't have a Junior Great Books story. Instead we will analyze story elements and start our novel, "Dodger and Me." Chapters 1-6 of Dodger and Me will be due Tuesday, September 12th for a grade. On Friday, we will have our first spelling test. Students' two spelling assignments (in their IAN) will be due on Friday. In writing, we will continue revising and editing our first personal narrative.
