Students Accelerated in Learning
ISD622 Advanced Academics - SAIL Spring, 2022
Skyview Middle School Debaters Win Championship!
The two eighth graders performed at a high level during the entire policy debate season, moving divisions from rookie to novice within the first month of tournaments. Skyview's top sixth-grade team of Ariel Petersen and Alexis Petersen also made it to the championship tournament and took seventh place overall.
ISD622 middle schools and high schools competed in MNUDL for the first time this year and we look forward to continued debate success!

Fifth Graders Prepare for Middle School!
The middle schools will run on a block schedule that provides opportunities for more in-depth learning in content areas as well as access to varied elective classes. Students will be placed into teams with common teachers to provide a more community-like environment. SAIL students will enjoy enrichments such as interest-based Seminar Days and opportunities to join a number of clubs and experiences, such as Debate League, Knowledge Bowl, and math and writing contests. SAIL teachers will also provide assistance and enrichments within students' classrooms or one-on-one.

Elementary Curriculum Highlight: Hands-On Equations
The spring SAIL curriculum unit for grades 3-5 is called Hands-On Equations.
In Hands-On Equations students physically set up algebraic equations using red and green number cubes to represent constants, blue and white pawns to represent variables, and a scale to represent balance. Students solve the equations by moving the manipulative pieces and keeping the balance. Students then transfer their solutions to written form.
Third Grade:
By the end of the lessons, students will be able to physically set up and solve such equations as:
2x + x + x + 2 = 2x + 10 and 2 ( x + 4 ) + x = x + 16
Fourth Grade:
Students will physically represent and solve equations such as:
2x + ( - x) + 3 = 2 (- x) + 15 and 2x - 3 (-x) = 20 + x
Fifth Grade:
Students will physically represent and solve equations such as:
2 ( -x + 8 ) - ( -3) = 2x + 3 and 2x - 2 ( -x + 4 ) = x + ( –2)
Students also apply algebraic notation to solve real world problems. For example:
· 3 more than five times a number, is the same as 18 more than twice the number. Find the number.
· You can buy 5 small pizzas for the same price as 3 small pizzas and 10 one-dollar drinks. How much does each pizza cost?
Hands-On Equations is a very active and fun unit for the SAIL students. Students receive feedback from their teachers each week and at the end of the unit.
