Challenge News
September 2023
We are off and running in our Challenge classes. Students have been engaged in new lessons and working with new math skills. Please take the time to ask your child each week about something they have learned or studied in our Challenge class.
THIRD GRADE NEWS
Students are learning about what life was like during the Elizabethan Era. We will We will compare it to what our lives are like today. Students will learn about William Shakespeare and he and his work are still relevant today. In Figure It Out the students will be solving word problems by drawing pictures and using patterns. Please encourage your students to study their multiplication tables. Your third graders should already know the facts for 1's, 2's, 5,s and 10's. They will be learning the rest of their facts this year, and it will help them tremendously in Figure It Out and later in the year in Hands On Equations if they are proficient. The are some great online games that can make learning these facts free and fun! They are www.multiplicationgames.org and www.multiplication.com. Flash cards are a great resource as well.
FOURTH GRADE NEWS
The fourth graders are learning about the Engineering Design Process. They will use this process to complete structure challenges. We have done two challenges so far, House of Cards and Straw Strength. In Figure It Out we will be drawing pictures and making lists to help them solve word problems. We will be working on reviewing Hands on Equations. Your child needs to be proficient with their multiplication and division skills. This is necessary in order to be successful with our math programs. The are some great online games that can make learning these facts free and fun! FIFTH GRADE NEWS
Viewpoints is the name of our fifth grade unit. The students will study icons and made their own personal coat of arms using icons that describe them. The fifth graders will also be learning about the Gateway Arch National park in St. Louis, MO and why it was built. They will also learn about the parts of this National Park.. In Figure It Out the students are learning to solve problems using patterns and experimenting. In Hands on Equations we will spend the first couple of months reviewing skills from 4th grade and catching up students who are new to Challenge.
