From Mr. Backmeyer's Desk...
Our UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN starts THIS WEEK!
We are looking forward to our annual PENNY WAR!!!!!!!!!!! (Ok...we accept other coins too!) A slight twist to our annual war is that STEM contraptions will be built by 5th grade students that will make it more fun to deposit the change into 5 gallon buckets in the commons. All buckets will have a "yellow brick road" contraption to place the change into and grades 3-6 will deposit their money from the upper level. The grade level collecting the most money will be awarded a movie in the auditorium before Winter Break!!! Our school goal is $1200! IF that goal is reached Mr. Backmeyer and Mrs. Jackson have to dress up as two characters from the Wizard of Oz! You might see Dorothy and the Scarecrow...or Lion...or the Tin Man at Southside?!
WHY support the United Way? The United Way represents a number of wonderful agencies that assist our school corporation in meeting the needs of our children. For example, 1,803 nights of safe shelter were provided to our kids by the Turning Point Domestic Violence Shelter. 200 kids participated in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. 2,008 stocked backpacks were provided to kids in need by the Bartholomew County School Supply Assistance Program. 369 kids received lower cost or FREE mental health counseling services by Family Services, Inc. 209 kids received help from Family School Partners. More than 200 kids, on average, attended after school programs at the Foundation For Youth (FFY). (A list of United Way agencies is below.)

Please be sure you are sending your student to school with a jacket or coat. We will go outside as long as it is safe. If the ground is wet, but not raining, we will go outside also. Teachers ask the students to stay out of the puddles. Unless a doctor note is on file with the office, all students are expected to go outside for recess.
Legado Academy Applications Begin December 1st
BCSC started a new two-way immersion pathway at the beginning of this school year and the year has been amazing so far. The pathway is optional and is located at Clifty Creek Elementary. It begins in Pre-K and Kindergarten. For the 2019-2020 school year, it will expand to first grade.
Families are invited to apply to attend the Legado Spanish Immersion Academy. Students accepted into Legado Spanish Immersion Academy will have the unique opportunity to study the BCSC curriculum in both Spanish and English, ultimately graduating with a Certificate of Multilingual Proficiency from the state of Indiana.
Legado is creating a Legacy of Global Opportunities. Give your child the GIFT OF A BILINGUAL EDUCATION! The application process begins December 1, 2018. The selection process will take place the week of February 4, 2019.

BCSC TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION - SEAT BELTS
BCSC is fortunate to have many buses equipped with seat belts to ensure that students are safe while they ride. Students are taught at the beginning of the school year the procedure to operate the seat belt. Please know that if students choose to not wear their seat belt, or choose to remove it during transit, disciplinary action may result. Thank you in advance for discussing the importance of wearing a seat belt with your child, as our goal is to keep children safe while riding both to/from school and during field trips. Feel free to reach out to the transportation department with questions or concerns.
