A Note from Ms. Graves
As many of you have read, and so graciously volunteered already, grade 2 is embarking on the final piece of our service learning project. We have decided to take action and help raise awareness for the Shukran Committee and their dinner fundraiser. As a class we wrote the email you received on Thursday and so many students have fun ideas how they can take action and help. Thank you so much for encouraging and supporting them in this project. :)
As we are wrapping up our informational writing review unit many students requested to type a portion of their story. This was the perfect time to introduce Google Docs to the students. In their class folder (within my account) they learned how to create a doc, title that doc, change the font and text size, and also how to space after the end of a sentence. For the next three weeks we will be reviewing fiction writing crafts and right before school is out we would like to have a publishing party to showcase both our informational and fictional writing. Stay tuned for the invite!
Please note our final swimming unit in PE will begin next week. You should have received the email from Mr. Pratley via Power School. If you did not receive the letter, I have attached it below.
Weekly Subject Updates
Series Book Clubs
This week we took a closer look at how author’s use precise words and extraordinary language to make vivid pictures in our minds. We recapped on how we can use what we already know to predict what will happen next in the story and we explored how the use of punctuation by an author brings a story to life. We continued to find examples of these in our Series books. We also learned 3 ways a reader can share their love of a book. Our favorite was giving an award to the character!
We are sprinting along with the completion of our non-fiction writing and we are paying close attention to our audience and what they might want to learn from a book like ours. We are also carefully crafting introductions to our topics and conclusions that may be a call to action, a connection back to the start of the book/chapter, or we may end with an exploratory question that may have arisen throughout the writing of our book.
Repeated AdditionThis week in math, students used math drawings to represent equal groups, and relate them to repeated addition. They also were introduced to arranging equal groups by using a tape diagram. The unit newsletter will be sent home in your child’s folder on Sunday. Please take time to look through this informative letter about the final math unit of the year.
*The 2nd grade team kindly asks that you not teach multiplication facts as something to be memorized. This prevents students from reasoning out and practicing working with groups of the same number. Thank you for your support with this.
Forces and Motion
Students continued to grow their knowledge about forces and motion by learning about gravity and balance this week. They learned that balance is when gravity is pulling down on something equally. Next week we will learn about another force: magnetism. Here is a link for a fun at home experiment about gravity and magnets if you would like to try. http://buggyandbuddy.com/gravity/
