Kindergarten - Following Directions. Practice and repetition are necessary for students to internalize and be able to use the skills taught in the Second Step program. In this lesson, students use and apply some of the listening and attention skills they have learned. They also increase their motivation to use their skills by focusing on their importance and usefulness.

st Grade - Self-Talk for Learning. Self-Talk is a developmentally appropriate strategy children can use to help themselves listen, follow directions, and stay on task. Over time, self-talk typically becomes internalized and is no longer spoken out loud. However, whether out loud or silent, self-talk can be a powerful tool to help students remember directions and focus and guide their efforts. Click here for a home link activity
nd Grade -Identifying Feelings. The ability to identify others’ feelings using physical, verbal and situational clues are essential to developing empathy. Being able to label feelings as comfortable or uncomfortable lays in the foundation for coping effectively with difficult emotions. Accurately identifying others’ feelings helps students make friends and avoid conflicts with peers. Click here for a home link activity
rd Grade - Identifying Others’ Feelings. The ability to identify others’ feelings using physical, verbal, and situational clues is essential to the development of empathy. Elementary students may misinterpret how someone else is feeling if they assume others will react and feel the same way they would. Understanding that different people can have different feelings in similar situations, and that feelings can change, helps students develop empathy and perspective-taking skills. Accurately identifying others’ feelings helps students make friends and avoid conflicts with peers. Click here for a home link activity
th Grade - Understanding Different Perspectives - Perspective-taking is a critical skill for working in groups and successfully resolving interpersonal conflicts. When students fail to think about others’ perspectives, they may make faulty assumptions instead. Some students automatically assume others have hostile intentions. Those who act on this assumption may act aggressively, increasing conflicts or even violence among students. Considering others’ perspectives is an important part of empathy. Increasing students’ empathy may make them less likely to bully others because, with empathy, they can imagine how a victim feels. Increased empathy may also decrease student support of others’ bullying and make students more likely to help those who are mistreated. In general, empathic students have fewer conflicts and better relationships with peers. Click here for a home link activity
th Grade - Being Assertive - It is important for students to learn the differences between assertive, aggressive, and passive ways of communicating. Aggressive communication causes problems with other students, school staff, and adults in the community. Students can reduce their involvement in aggressive and violent behaviors by using assertive communication skills to stand up for themselves and get a point across without disrespecting others. Learning to be assertive also has value for students being bullied or otherwise mistreated by peers. These students can use assertiveness as a tool to stand up for their rights. Finally, students need assertiveness skills to get help in school and to communicate respectfully with adults across a variety of situations. Click here for a home link activity
