Maternity Leave Plans
I have been working hard on preparing my staff and colleagues for my maternity leave. This week I let my staff know what the plans are for my absence. I currently have a c-section planned for the week of April 15th.
The leader in the building will be Amy Pfeifer. Amy will be your main contact when I am gone. Her email is apfeifer@hgtigers.com. If a situation is brought her way that she feels she needs support with, she will include Angie Houston, the middle school principal.
Angie Houston is the first administrator on call. Angie will be at Northview frequently to check in on the students and staff. If you need to contact Angie, her email is ahouston@hgtigers.com. If Angie is not available, Shannon Kilton will be the next administrator on call. Shannon plans on being present as much as possible as well.
Please let me know if you have any questions about this plan.
Thank you,
Sarah Ellinger

Forward Exam Snacks
Please consider donating snacks to our 3rd and 4th grade students for our Forward State Exam. Research has proven that when students have their basic needs met, they perform better on exams. We can avoid the barrier of students being hungry before taking the Forward Exam by providing healthy options here at school. You can sign up on the Sign-up Genius below if you would like to donate. Please note, any item you sign up for must be in a quantity of 22. We have approximately 22 students in each class in 3rd and 4th grade. Your support is greatly appreciated. Our 3rd and 4th grade families will be receiving a letter about the Forward Exam test schedule soon. Please send donations to Northview by Monday, April 1st with our first testing date as Tuesday, April 2nd.

Counseling Corner with Mrs. Pfeifer
Last month, Northview students learned about having a Growth Mindset! We learned that our brain is like a muscle and doing challenging things gives our brain the exercise it needs to get stronger! Part of having a growth mindset is knowing that it's okay to make mistakes, and that persevering through challenges only makes us stronger. We focused on the concept of “The Power of Yet” and learned that some things we learn take more time and effort than others. It’s not always easy to persevere when things get tough, and using the word “yet” helps us feel empowered to keep trying! Yet the Yeti (stuffed animal) visited our classrooms as a reminder to practice adding the word "Yet" to every "I can't" statement that pops into our mind. For example, instead of saying "I can't do it" we can say "I haven't figured out how to do it...YET!"
For the month of February, we will be focusing on Flexible Thinking. Flexible thinking is the ability to think about things in a new or different way. It helps us deal with uncertainty, solve problems, adjust to changes, and incorporate new information into our plans and ideas. Flexible thinking is also a key aspect of self-regulation and handling big emotions. We will learn how to be problem-solvers and not get "stuck" in our thoughts and feelings when things don't go as planned.
Kids Heart Challenge
As you may know, February is heart healthy awareness month! Our PE classes at Northview have been having fun learning how and why we take care of our hearts. At our school-wide assembly last week, Jackie Weir from the American Heart Association came to speak to us. We also had some spotlight jumpers from 1st-4th grade along with Ms. Dardis jumping double-dutch! What a great time! So far, our school has raised almost $9,000 for the American Heart Association. Way to go, Northview!!! All donations are due for the Kids Heart Challenge on Friday, February 16th. Thank you for your support!

Kindergarten News
Kindergarten families were invited to a reading informational meeting as classrooms are beginning guided reading groups. The kindergarteners are excited to learn more about and practice reading at their individual reading levels.
In phonics, kindergarteners are learning how to make more and more words by using rhyming and word-parts. In readers workshop, they are learning how to be super readers by activating super powers, including pointer power, slider power, snap word power, fix-it power, and reread power inorder to read new books. In writers workshop, kindergarteners are practicing showing and telling about topics that are important to them by writing books and telling about their topics across pages. In math, kindergarten students are learning about teen numbers and place value. They are learning how to use a group of ten ones and extra ones to make teen numbers.
We recently celebrated the 100th day of school with a day full of themed activities! Kindergarten students are looking forward to a strong finish for the remainder of the school year!
1st Grade News
First graders have been working hard as we reached the 100th day of school! We have become experts as we write our nonfiction stories filled with facts. We have been adding in adjectives that we’ve learned about in grammar. In phonics and reading, we’ve been learning about the world as we study nonfiction books and tackle BIG words. We’re working hard during math to add and subtract within 100 using 10s and 1s, as well as counting up to 120! We had a blast celebrating Valentine’s Day with our 4th grade buddies!
2nd Grade News
2nd graders just completed opinion work in Writing Workshop. They composed "Books of Awesome", letters to authors and illustrators, and nominated books of their choice for awards. In all of these projects, the students not only shared their opinions, but also backed them up with reasons and examples. The kids learned to respect others' opinions! During the celebration, Mrs. Henschel read 2 books to the writers showcasing fun opinion work by other authors.
3rd Grade News
Third Graders have wrapped up their mystery reading unit. Students have been learning how to read mysteries closely by analyzing characters, being on alert for details, predicting what might happen next, etc. This unit strengthens their ability to read fiction by teaching them the thinking work they need to do as readers. Third graders will share their new knowledge with 2nd graders and plant the seeds of excitement about reading mysteries.
4th Grade News
It's hard to believe we are more than half way through our school year as we celebrated the 100th day of school recently! 4th grade students have an opportunity to participate in Battle of the Books, where students read books with a group and are asked questions about them. We have a record amount of students who are wanting to participate in this, which is awesome! Students have been busy reading books, taking notes and communicating with their group. 4th graders have also been hard at work in each of our units. In math, we have wrapped up our algebra unit where we practiced writing equations and solved word problems. We have now begun unit conversions using the metric and customary system. In reading and writing we have been learning all about the American Revolution. In reading, students have been using research strategies in order to learn about their topics. In writing, we have been using our research to create a chapter book about the American Revolution. So far we have worked on 2 informational chapters and are in the process of writing a personal narrative about one of the topics from the American Revolution. Students have done an awesome job with their units and we are excited to see their finished piece!
