Newsletter Week 10 Term 3

Sacred Heart School Christchurch - 1 October 2021

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This brings us to the end of term 3. Thanks to Covid it has been a disjointed term but as expected the Sacred Heart Community have met the challenges thrown our way. We thank you for adhering to the restrictions and health measures put in place to keep us all safe. We thank you all for the support you gave your children while locked down at levels 3 and 4. We thank you for returning the children to school ready to start learning again. We now look forward to the final term of 2021 and pray that more of the restrictions are lifted to enable us to share with you all some of the key events linked to Term 4.

We are really hoping to be able to share activities with you next term with athletics sports, the Production, kapa haka festival, end of year Masses and the final Prize Giving. We will keep you fully informed of any developments.

We look forward to seeing you all in Term 4. Have a restful break with your lovely children.

Catholic Schools Day

We, as a school, were invited to participate in a Circle of Prayer where across the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch, members of school communities prayed, in solidarity, for the work of Catholic schools, a place where we stand.

In prayer we joined with other schools on our faith journey - Catholic schools communities throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. Children later shared work and songs with students from other classes.

Liturgical Year

During the school holidays the Catholic Church in Aotearoa New Zealand will celebrate Support Life Sunday. Our Catholic bishops are calling for the faithful to show their love for life in deeds as well as words. Support Life Sunday this year is Sunday 10 October. Its theme will be Honouring and Supporting Health Carers

Faith Facts

The Mass

The next major part of the Eucharistic Prayer is the epiclesis. In the epiclesis, the priest asks the Father to send the Holy Spirit on the gifts of bread and wine so that, through the power of the Spirit, they may become the Body and Blood of Christ. This same Spirit will transform those attending the liturgy that they may grow in their unity with each other, with the whole Church, and with Christ.

Sport

Congratulations to all three basketball teams who finished the season on a high. The year 5/6 team won their last game to finish 5th in B grade. The Year 7/8 Pacers played a great last game to win 19th place in B grade.

A massive congratulations must go to the Year 7/8 Celtics team who won B grade. They played an outstanding game, convincingly taking the win.

Huge thanks goes to everyone who supported these teams this season, especially Mr Aliganga, Miss Journee and Mr McManus who supported the students at training and were at the games each week making sure things went smoothly.

Next term school athletics will be held on Tuesday 26th October from 9am-3pm. If you are able to help on this day please contact me as soon as possible.

Book Character Day

Helping children exposed to upsetting content online.

Young people may find things they never intended to look at online so talking regularly about their activities and encouraging them to come to you is one of the best conversations you can have. If your child has been exposed to something that upsets them it can be hard to know how to help.

Netsafe has developed the following advice to guide you through this difficult situation.

Hats and Sun Safety

All children must be wearing a blue wide brimmed hat during breaktimes and during class outdoor activities at school in Term 4. There are hats available to be purchased from the office for $5 each.

We do have sunscreen in all classrooms and recommend children arriving at school with sunscreen already applied.

2022 Enrolments

We have very few places available for next year. Hopefully, we have included any siblings to come in on our list. If you have or know of any children not on our list wanting to start next year can you please get someone to contact us as soon as possible.
