HERSHEY NOTES
MARCH 16, 2018
FROM THE DESK OF MRS. FIELDS
Have you always wanted to catch a leprechaun? Talk to a Hershey second grader! They did an amazing job designing and creating leprechaun traps. If one of the wee little men venture this way, he is certain to be caught in one of our 90 traps. We will let you know if the luck of the Irish is with one of our students and is fortunate enough to be be led to a leprechaun’s pot of gold. Have a happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Thank you for attending your child’s parent/teacher conference this week! We are close to reaching our goal of conferencing with 100% of our parent population. If you had to miss your scheduled appointment, your child’s teacher should be contacting you very soon to arrange a new meeting date and time.
A BIG shout out goes to our Book Fair organizers Megan Ketterer, Kris Martin and Mollie Siu-Chong. They worked very hard to make the fair a wonderful experience for our Hershey families. Of course we could not have pulled off this week long event without the help from many, many parent volunteers. Your volunteerism is greatly appreciated. Synergy is always best!
Down Syndrome of Indiana will be participating in a Dance Flash Mob on March 21, at Purdue Memorial Union, at 6:00. If your dancing skills are like mine, you might prefer the Down Syndrome “Buddy Walk” scheduled for May 19th, at 9 AM, at the Tippecanoe County Amphitheater. In the past, many Hershey teachers and families have been able to participate in the walk. We would love for you to join us in one or both of these events; I guarantee it will be a wonderful experience!
MISS RIORDAN'S NOTES
Since the last newsletter, the current second grade classes graduated from radKIDS! Students were encouraged to invite family and friends to watch as the students demonstrated the skills they learned. It has been incredible to watch the progression in each student’s skills and self-confidence as the program advanced. All grades from the current graduates up to the the seventh grade classes at East Tipp are trained in the radKIDS program. The program is expanding within TSC with Cole Elementary starting the program shortly after graduation.
We have launched the poster of the baby pictures as part of the appreciation station to raise money and celebrate Disability Awareness Month! Specifically, the money will be donated in support of World Down Syndrome Day on March 21. The poster has been a hit so far! We have 25 teachers and support staff that submitted pictures of when they were younger! The 5th grade Ambassadors Club supervise the poster, collect money, and hand out ballots during their lunch and recess. We will be accepting guesses until March 21 and will reveal all the teachers and support staff pictures on March 23 during morning announcements! A ballot of all 25 staff is $1! If you're in the building, stop by the office and take a look and fill out a ballot!
As a reminder on March 21, students can wear crazy socks and/or blue and yellow to show their support for World Down Syndrome Day.
Have a safe and relaxing Spring Break!
KINDERGARTEN ROUNDUP
Roundup is Wednesday, April 11 from 5:15 to 6:45. Parents and incoming kindergartener are invited to attend this informational fun evening.
Contact our office if you have any questions.
Please help spread the word to your friends, family, and neighbors.
MARCH - HABIT OF THE MONTH
SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND THEN BE UNDERSTOOD
While I love all of the habits, this is my most favorite because it helps students understand empathy. We are trying to teach our kiddos to consider how others will feel by the choices they make. We are working on solving problems calmly- listening first to others then explaining our feelings in a kind way. We hope that by promoting this habit, we will further our mission for creating a culture of kindness at Hershey.
