BAND UIL - A note from Ms. Bialecki...
On Thursday April 6th the CMS Honor Band Competed in the Region 3 UIL Concert and Sight Reading Evaluation at Canton HS. The band received a rating of excellent in both their concert performance, and their sight reading performance.CHOIR - A note from Ms. Clayburn...
The Commerce Middle School Choirs have had many “first” experiences and successes this year as the district instituted a choral music program for the first time in the history of the school district. The school district, in collaboration with the A&M-Commerce Department of Music, funded a choral conducting graduate assistantship in return for 20 hours a week from this graduate student to develop a choral music program at the middle school and high school. Candace Clayburn eagerly accepted this position and began teaching a 6th grade, 7th and 8th grade and high school choir in August. The middle school students have been very busy this school year learning new skills and developing their talents in the classroom each day. They have performed at several community and school district events and the students have competed in the solo and ensemble contest, auditioned for the TMEA Region III Middle School All-Region Choir and competed in the Region III Middle School UIL Concert Sight Reading Contest. The students have worked hard to develop their singing skills and music reading ability. This Fall eleven students earned a first division rating at the solo and ensemble contest with one student being awarded the outstanding soloist award. Six students prepared to audition for the Middle School All-Region Choir and two earned a place in an All-Region Choir and participated in the Clinic and Concert. Most recently, the 7th and 8th grade choir competed, for the first time in the history of Commerce ISD, in the Middle School UIL Concert Sight Reading Contest. These students represented CISD, Commerce MS, Ms. Clayburn and themselves with confidence and dignity. We are so proud of these student’s accomplishments and are excited about the future of the choral music program set forth by these brave 7th and 8th graders. We look forward to all they will accomplish as they continue to mature as singers and as young musicians.

Cinco de Mayo Program at CMS
Reasons to celebrate Cinco de Mayo...
Why celebrate Cinco de Mayo? As L.A Times writer, David E. Hayes-Bautista said, “Cinco de Mayo was made in America, by Latinos who proudly bore the U.S. and Mexican flag…” General Ignacio Zaragoza, a natural born citizen of the United States of America led the Mexican army to victory over the French. This victory closed entry to the U.S that Napoleon had hoped for as an advantage to further his quest. Cinco de Mayo was also enacted in 1933 by President Franklin Roosevelt under the Good Neighbor Policy.
