Holland Elementary School Message
January 30, 2020
Hello HES Families,
On January 17th, Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Robert Fraser, sent out a comprehensive message discussing Council Rock’s school start times exploration efforts. In the case you missed it or wish to read it again, the letter is posted on Council Rock’s website in the “News and Announcements” section and also archived in the CR School Start Times Hub.
I want to draw your attention to an upcoming presentation mentioned in Dr. Fraser’s letter. On Wednesday, February 5th, nationally recognized expert on sleep health, Dr. Wendy Troxel, will present Snooze or Lose, Promoting Sleep Health in Adolescents at 7 P.M. in Newtown Middle School’s Auditorium. Dr. Fraser urged all Council Rock parents to come out for Dr. Troxel’s critically acclaimed presentation, and I want to personally invite you to attend.
Dr. Wendy Troxel is Senior Behavioral Scientist at the RAND Corporation and Adjunct Faculty in the Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. Her work has been widely cited by the media, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Financial Times, ABC World News Tonight, CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, and BBC. Dr. Troxel was also one of the featured sleep experts in the National Geographic “Sleepless in America” documentary and served on the Joint State Government Commission’s Advisory Committee on Secondary School Start Times for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Her TED talk on the impact of school start times on adolescent sleep has received more than 1.8 million views and is at the forefront of national and international conversations on this topic.
The topic of student sleep health is incredibly relevant right now, as the District prioritizes Student Wellness, and Dr. Troxel’s presentation is of value for parents of children of all ages. Please feel free to invite an out-of-district friend(s) to join you on February 5th, as Council Rock’s presentation is open to the public and free of charge.
Finally, if you haven’t done so already, please carve out some time to review the content that’s been posted to Council Rock’s School Start Times Hub. The hub will grow as the district dives deeper into its exploration of school start times, but there’s already a good amount of information that will help you familiarize yourself with this important topic. Thank you.

Book Buds Reading Program
Do you think your child would benefit from reading a few extra minutes each week? Does your child enjoy spending time with older peers?
Book Buds is a volunteer group of high school students started by two Holland Elementary School (HES) graduates, Julia Levin and Gavin Holloran. We both currently have siblings at HES. Book Buds offers an opportunity for your child to spend time with an energetic and fun high school student at Northampton Township Library in Richboro for 30-minute reading sessions. The high school students will be reading with children who do not typically enjoy independent reading or dislike reading at home to caregivers. This is a chance to make reading a fun activity with a teenage role model. Each session will end with a fun activity customized to your child’s interests.
More information can be found at the followiong LINK.

From the Nurse's Office
If your child has been ill, please allow adequate recovery time so that your child does not re-introduce illness at school by returning too early. Please also consider the fact that some children are very fatigued during illness recovery and do need a little extra time at home. Children who have had diarrhea or have been vomiting should remain home for 24 hours symptom-free before returning to school.
We ask that children be free of fever for 24 hours, with NO Tylenol or Motrin during the 24 hours, before returning to school. If unsure, please call the health office to discuss your child’s care.
We wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year.
Thank you. Mrs. Jordan and Mrs. Gaughan
