Native Americans vs. Government

By:Haley Treamer

Throughout history many events have focused more on the outcome and what they would be gaining from human life and what they would be losing. For example the Native Americans and the Western Expansion, is a good example of overrunning land and hurting the people along with it.

Human Rights have been one of many problems being faced throughout history, we see this problem when talking about slavery, the Holocaust, and the Western Expansion. To elaborate more on the Western Expansion we see the problem of what the government wants and what is best for human life (Native Americans). During the Western Expansion the government wanted to take the Mountains known as the Black Hills from the Sioux Indians, this caused conflict due to the Native Americans not wanting to give up the land that they found to be sacred. The plan the government had made was to take that land and give each individual Native American their own land to use as farming, and to start bringing them into civilization. The government wanted to turn what was the Native Americans land into railways, and to ultimately take the Black Hills for the gold. The rights that the Native Americans had were not being thought about at the time of this proposition. Their lands, the value and ancestry they had did not come into play when the government had talked about taking the lands. The government were only worried about getting the gold, and expanding the railroad industry. The government never thought about what this would do to the Native American culture, and lifestyle. The Native Americans had never been in a society that they didn’t have to live off the land and not fend for themselves. They were also taught to take what they had and make use of every little part of it. The well being of the Native Americans were "not" as important as the government wanting to expand the land.

The problem that was being faced many years ago by the Sioux Indians are still occurring today. Problems that are being faced include unemployment rates up to 50% (Destruction). Income and skill are also factors that affect the income to their families (Destruction). Most of the reservations are said to be in poverty across the U.S. (Native). Other problems that are being faced include alcoholism and suicide, which have been big troubles among the Native Americans (Native). Even though these bad times have brought upset there are also good things that come along the way. For example many have become good hunters, fishermen, farmers, and have made due with the materials around them to survive (Native). Others can get money from tourists by selling handicrafts (Destruction). Tribes can also earn money from taxes, they receive it from the oil and gases that are on their land that they sell (Destruction). Even though the problems have gotten better over time there are still many struggles and problems being faced with the Native Americans, and the reservations.

The problems that were and that are still being fought throughout history have come a long way. This is one event that supports the statement that government has been more focused on the outcome than of human life. The Native Americans were overrun by the government but they overcame the conflict, and stuck with their heritage and beliefs. Both the gains and losses of both the government and Native Americans can both be seen as historical evidence of conflict, and not thinking about human life over outcome. The problem that was being faced many years ago by the Sioux Indians are still occurring today.
