UPDATE ON MASKS IN SCHOOL
Last night the CCA School board voted 5-2 in favor of the following:
Once an individual school building reaches 10% or higher absentee rate due to illnesses, students and staff in that building will be required to wear a face mask for an entire school week. If during this week that percentage increases, or does not decrease, the district would re-evaluate and notify parents of a potential extension to the mask requirement.
The 10% deciding point was based on information Iowa schools must report to the Iowa Department of Public Health. The state asks that all districts who are experiencing a 10% or greater absentee rate due to illness (not all absences, just illness) in any individual building, report specific information to the Iowa Department of Public Health.
The District will consistently monitor the illness rates in each building and starting today, the dashboard will be revised daily to show illness percentage rates by building. This will require some significant tracking but most of it would involve data that we’re already collecting. Numbers can change throughout the day so we ask for your patience as we compile daily updates.

NEW SUPERKIDS CURRICULUM
Have you heard about Cass and Oswald yet?
Students in grades kindergarten, first and second grade are meeting “new friends” this year as part of our new reading materials! Cass likes to cook casseroles in the kitchen with her cat, Coconut. Oswald is a talented artist who loves to draw odd animals like the octopus, the ocelot, oxen, and otters. (Can you guess what letter sounds are being taught with these two characters?)
Throughout the program, students read stories about their new friends, the Superkids. They are also engaged in non-fiction text to learn about science, social studies, and build vocabulary. The solid phonics foundation the program provides assures that students become independent and confident readers, writers, and spellers. It’s a program that makes learning to read fun! Ask your student to tell you a little bit more about their “new Superkids friends”.

MENTAL ILLNESS AWARENESS WEEK AND WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY
October 3rd-9th is Mental Illness Awareness Week and October 10th, 2021 is
World Mental Health Day.
Our district is making a push to talk about and raise awareness of mental illness in efforts to decrease the stigma around mental health. Mental illness affects millions of people from all backgrounds. Each year, 1 in 5 U.S. adults and 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder. Every year in the United States it is estimated that 48 million adults are diagnosed with anxiety, 19.4 million adults are diagnosed with depression and 9 million adults are diagnosed with PTSD. Whether you or someone you know is diagnosed with a mental health condition, almost all of us have a connection to mental illness.
Together, let's change the conversation about mental health and show people they are not alone in their battle. It is up to us to show our children that mental health is okay to talk about and that going to therapy is awesome!
