Culture: Capturing Kids Hearts
"You must capture a child's heart to get to a child's mind..." -Dr.George Luck (Principal of Temple High South, Texas)
Many of us have completed the Capturing Kids' Hearts training. The training provides us with ideas on how to better connect with students to increase learning in the classroom. According to the Capturing Kids' Hearts research, there are five steps that must be taken each day that are essential to the success of the teaching day. These steps are called the EXCEL Teaching or Relationship Model. The steps are Engage, Xplore, Communicate, Empower, and Launch. We will review each of the steps in our Conquistador Corner, but only focus on one each time. The first step is Engage. For more about Engage, see below.
CKH: Engage
(See the paragraph above for more information).
The engage step is essential to the success of our teaching day. It begins when we greet the students at the door. We can simply say hello and smile or use a high-five, handshake or fist bump. Greeting students at the door immediately draws them into a relationship with us. We can then build upon that relationship as the class progresses. We accomplish several things with this step; we start the class on a positive welcoming note, we affirm each student, and we are giving students our full attention right away. We are preparing them for being involved in the learning process. Attached is the document on the ENGAGE step from our Capturing Kids' Hearts training book. A helpful list of things to consider is listed below. We'll go into more details on the other steps in future Conquistador Corners. Happy December everyone!
Things to consider when meeting & greeting students:
-Facial expression (relaxed, smiling and welcoming)
-Tone (tone of voice is 38% of what is being communicated)
-Posture (stand tall/confident, lean-in, non threatening)
-How to connect (smile, handshake, fist bump, high-five, initiated by you)
-Energy (positive, energetic, confident)
-Eye contact (look them in the eye and pay attention to their emotions/needs)
