Life is Beautiful
I watched Life is Beautiful. This film was nominated for seven Academy Awards in 1998, winning three. Roberto Benigni directed & starred in the film, along side Nicoletta Braschi.
In the beginning, I thought this would be a comedy, but it was not. Benigni used comedy to balance the horror of the Holocaust. Benigni played the part of Guido, a Jewish father in Italy. He falls in love with “Principessa” whom he meets in a most unusual way. I found myself cheering for them to fall in love.
If one doesn’t walk away from this film knowing the Italian word for “Princess”, then something is wrong. I was able to understand many other words as well, such as cavallo (horse), torta (cake), macchina (car), sorpresa (surprise), chiave (key), “mangia il pane” (eat the bread), etc. I was surprised at how many words I was able to recognize!
The Italian landscape was gorgeous in this movie! In the beginning, with the beautiful scenery & slapstick comedy, I had no idea it was to be a serious, almost heartbreaking film. However, when it came to the scene at the school where Guido impersonates the Inspector who is there to talk to the children about their superior race, I realized it was not all beauty & sunshine. I have recently read several works of historical fiction based in the era of WWII. What the Nazi regime was able to accomplish is nothing short of horrific. How they took control of an entire country and swayed public opinion to their whim is a lesson not one of us should forget.
This film was made in 1997, but was portraying Italy in the mid-1940’s, at the end of WWII. The film I watched for IT111, Notte di Calabria, was filmed sometime in the 1950s or early ‘60s. It showed Italy as torn & broken after the war. Life is Beautiful showed a beautiful Italy. I enjoyed the beautiful Italy much more…even if the ending was sad.
Vivere – Andrea Bocelli & Laura Pausini
I chose “Vivere” by Andrea Bocelli, with Laura Pausini. In this version of the song, Laura sings in English (other versions, the female part is sung in Italian). I enjoyed this version because the translation is not what I would have understood had I translated the lyrics myself. Her lyrics were completely rewritten, it appears to me. They don’t match any literal translation to the Italian lyrics. However, the English lyrics really helped me understand the meaning of the song.
It’s interesting to me that they translate “Vivere” to live, as “Dare to live.” That gives the song so much more emotion! My understanding of the song is to urge people to find true love…even if you’ve been knocked down before. They are saying that you are not truly living if you don’t search to find that one great love. I can so relate to this because I recognize I wasn’t really living until I met my husband. Now that we have found each other, life is just so much MORE…more everything.
I chose this song because of its importance to my sister & her husband. They found this song shortly after they began dating. Like so many others, they had been through hard times & failed marriages. But together, they were inseparable. I have always admired the way Mark loves my sister…he absolutely adores her & I just love that about him. This song fits them so perfectly that Mark engraved the word “Vivere” on the footboard of the bed he built for them.
Words or expressions I learned from this song:
Io amo l'amore ma non la gente
“I love the love but not the people”
I’m not sure that I translated this correctly, because it seems such a strange statement. Given my understanding of the song, this is contradictory to the overall meaning of finding that one true, great love.
Qualcuno non mi basta.
Vivere cercando ancora il grande amore.
Perche perche perche perche non vivi questa sera?
“Someone is not enough for me.
Live still looking for great love.
Why why why why do not live this evening?”
This phrase fits my overall interpretation of the song that just any person, even someone you really like, is not really living. They are saying DON’T SETTLE…get out there right now, tonight!, and find true love.
