Glennwood Elementary ~ Where Learning Takes Flight

Holly Brookins, PhD, Principal ~ Summer Clayton, Assistant Principal ~ Jill Tolsma, Instructional Coach

Hello Glennwood Families,

I am thrilled to announce that Glennwood’s school counseling program has been designated as a Recognized ASCA Model Program by the American School Counselor Association. This is a BIG DEAL and has been a two-year process that was led by Mr. Blase, our school counselor. We are so proud of him and all who worked towards this goal for our school and students. Here is a bit more information about what this means:

The Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) recognizes schools committed to delivering comprehensive, data-informed school counseling programs aligned with the ASCA National Model framework. The RAMP designation demonstrates to administrators, school boards, families and the community at large that the schools are committed to supporting the mission of the school and district.

Warmest regards,

Holly Brookins, PhD

Virtual Lunch and Learn with Mr. Blase - Wednesday, March 29

Virtual Lunch and Learn with Mr. Blase - Wednesday, March 29 - 11:30-12:15 pm

In today’s world, families are finding less time to connect. From the demands of dual-income households, to extracurricular activities, and even the use of electronic devices, many external factors claim the family’s focus. Weekly Family Meetings can assist not only in time management, but more importantly in providing opportunities for parents and children to discuss important issues, strengthen communication, reinforce values, and nurture positive relationships. Please come for a virtual Lunch N’ Learn with our school counselor Jonathan Blase to get all the resources necessary to begin family meetings on your own. Virtual link to the meeting.

Parent Volunteers for Read Live Needed

We are looking for a few parent volunteers to work with our students in reading. Every morning our intervention teachers host Read Live for eligible students in the library. Read Live is a computer based reading intervention. The students working through the program are assisted and monitored by adults. The more adults we have, the more students we can support.

What days and times can I volunteer?

We need volunteers daily from 7:55- 8:30.

What is the commitment?

We do need consistency. We are asking that volunteers commit to at least 1 morning (the same day) each week.

Is there training involved?

There is a short training video. The first 2 sessions you sign up for will also be part of your training. During these first 2 sessions, you will observe the teachers as they work with students.

Do I need experience?

No. If you can read, you can sign up to be a Read Live volunteer. Our intervention teachers will always be with you to support or answer questions.

What exactly will I be doing?

You will help support students as they move through the steps of the program and assist in monitoring their reading progress.

Click here to sign up. We are asking that all volunteers commit to at least 1 morning (the same day) each week. Thank you!

Kindergarten and New Student Registration for 2023-24 School Year

Kindergarten Enrollment for new students for the 2023-24 school year is now open. All current students (including students attending College Heights Pre-K) do not need to re-enroll to move to the next grade band. However, if you have a child attending private Pre-K, please enroll your child for Kindergarten on March 6th. Early registration really helps our planning for next year. Help us spread the word among your neighbors as well. Also, save the date for K-Day! on April 20. More info to come.

However, current students entering K, 3rd, 6th, and 9th grades should be prepared to provide (at their school) updated residency information when school starts.

Please go to https://www.csdecatur.net/enrollment to review the enrollment process and required documentation.

Musical Beat Buddies Needed

Our music program is seeking any beanie babies that are ready to find a new home and become part of a class set of musical “beat buddies.” Our young musicians love to use beat buddies as we develop our sense of steady beat and move creatively to various styles of music. Any contributions can be dropped off in the front office in a basket marked “Musical Beat Buddies” or given to Ms. Pierce. Rest assured, your beloved beanie babies will be well loved and taken care of in our music room.

Change of Bus Stop Procedures - Bus Pass Required

The City Schools of Decatur transportation department requires parents to notify the bus driver of any afternoon bus stop changes. The parent must complete the required bus pass below, and the student must present the bus pass to the driver if there is a bus stop change for day. This would be used, for example, if your child has permission to go to a play date at someone's else home. Without a bus pass, the bus driver is required to drop the student at his/her designated stop. (You may print a copy of the bus pass by opening the pdf file below.) Thank you.
