Self-Care Strategy: Use Your Voice For Good
Hello, Lakota Scholars and Caring Adults -
The school year is quickly wrapping up and this year has been anything but typical. The end of the year always brings mixed emotions. Excitement usually mixes with sadness. This year, though, these emotions are more pronounced for many of us than they normally are. So much is happening in the world right now that celebrating the last day of school may feel, understandably, almost inappropriate. And yet we still want to acknowledge the growth that each of our students has made. We want to say our “goodbyes” to our 8th graders, our “see you laters” to our 7th and 6th graders, and our “hellos” to our incoming 5th graders.
Given the current events and the loss of spring school traditions, we may find ourselves experiencing grief and loss in ways that we have not anticipated. Living in conditions that we have little control over can bring up feelings of powerlessness and hopelessness, thoughts that things will never get better. This may be a good time to revisit one of our early newsletter lessons on circles of control.
We can let go of things we cannot change so we can focus our energy and actions on the many things we CAN change. The power of united voices can bring great change. Lakota Falcons are resilient and strong. Our students and families have an amazing capacity for caring for each other, and we are stronger together.
One proven strategy to overcoming feelings of powerlessness or hopelessness is to decide on one or two things that you WILL DO to make your circumstances (yourself, your school, your community, your world) a better place. What will you do in the summer months to care for each other? What will you do to protect each other? What will we do (students AND adults) to challenge stereotypes and injustice in our school systems? What will each of us do to make this next school year the best year yet, no matter what challenges are ahead of us? One of Maya Angelou’s most famous poems repeats over and over “And still I rise.” Our students have done hard things this year. And they will come back even stronger next year.
Be safe, be kind, and take care of each other. We believe in you!

"I Look At The World" by Langston Hughes
I look at the world
From awakening eyes in a black face—
And this is what I see:
This fenced-off narrow space
Assigned to me.
I look then at the silly walls
Through dark eyes in a dark face—
And this is what I know:
That all these walls oppression builds
Will have to go!
I look at my own body
With eyes no longer blind—
And I see that my own hands can make
The world that's in my mind.
Then let us hurry, comrades,
The road to find.
