General News! Week of Dec. 4th-8th
Happy Monday !
This week is our SMMS Book Fair. If you are looking for some great gift ideas, you may want to stop by Wednesday or Thursday afternoon from 3-5 pm; the book fair will be open extended hours. Come on by, and see about giving someone a great gift. On Tuesday students are encouraged to get into the spirit of things, and dress up like the "Wild Wild West"!
Thursday After School...We have a number of students with missing assignments. Whether they are missing due to absence, or some other reason, the students are responsible for making some arrangements to get these completed. Thursday afternoons are a great time to get them done! This week and next, will be the last opportunities for this 1st semester.
Please remember your child must have a signed permission slip in order to stay, as well as an indication of how they will be getting home. We have had a number of students who are attempting to stay and want to tell us that their parents know they are here. This is not acceptable, and we will no longer make calls or attempts to find out if this is true or not. Also a quick reminder that the new pick-up for 8th graders is around the back of the building, in the bus loop. Pick up is at 3:45. Thank you for being prompt!

Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
Language Arts
This Week in Language Arts we will continue to explore the Civil War through the eyes of Emma Edmonds, alias Private Franklin Thompson and now as a contraband slave named Cuff. Will she be able to pull off this daring disguise, and bring back crucial information to help the Union Army? Or will she find herself trapped behind rebel lines?
On Tuesday students will take the Narrative Assesslet. This practice test will be administered in the same manner that the EOG will be. It will allow students to get some writing practice within similar time constraints as the end of the year testing. Students will also receive feedback from scorers on their strengths and weaknesses. It should help us all have a better picture of where we are, and where we need to go.
Our current root word set, "All things Great and Small", was introduced last week, and will be tested on Thursday. A link for a STUDYSTACK is in Google Classroom. Students should be working on these independently at home.
Our 3rd and final Choice Reading book for this quarter is due this Friday, December 8th.
Students who are missing any of their books for this quarter will have until next Friday, December 15th. It is not too late to get these done!
We have completed eight weeks of TweenTribune. These are to be completed each week by Friday afternoon at 3pm. These two independent reading practice assignments are the only assignments that students need to be completing outside of my classroom. This consistent practice will help students build up the reading endurance that they will need for high school and beyond, as well as to increase their Lexile levels.
Thanks for all you do at home! Enjoy your week!

Mr. Frazier
This week, Team 8-2 Mathematics will continue our study of the Pythagorean Theorem. So far, the students have learned to use the Pythagorean Theorem to determine the value of missing sides of a right triangle. Today, we began using the converse of the Pythagorean Theorem to prove whether a triangle is a right triangle. Over the next couple of days, we will use the theorem to find distance on the coordinate plane and solve real-world problems.
Team 8-2 Mathematics completed the Master Assessment (MA) covering number sense and equations and expressions. Overall, the MA covered a total of eight standards and scores were relatively low. Each standard is listed in PowerSchool. Over the next couple of days, I will input the grades. If your child scored 0-2, then they failed to master that standard. If they scored 3 or 4, then they mastered the standard. Each standard is worth approximately 14.5 points. We will review the standards this week, and beginning next week, the students can retake the ones they failed upon request.
