Passport to the Future - PSAT
PSAT Exam - Wednesday, October 16
The PSAT or Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test is a preliminary version of the SAT. While the PSAT will help students prepare to take the SAT, the biggest benefit of the PSAT is that a high score can open the door to a National Merit Scholarship and other awards. Tenth and Eleventh grade students at LEHS will all take the PSAT this Wednesday along with more than 3.4 million high school students nationwide. This assessment is often the starting point for students planning their college admissions journey.
As a sophomore each student’s results will give them a clear picture of strengths and weaknesses in Reading, Writing, and Math so that they can better prepare for their National Merit Qualifying test their junior year. If students use their results to improve on their skills, not only will their subsequent PSAT score improve but their SAT or ACT performance will improve as well. Results from the PSAT can also predict a student’s potential for successful completion of Advanced Placement classes. LEHS counselors and teachers use PSAT results to encourage students to take AP classes that they might not otherwise have considered. According to the National Association for College Admission Counseling, grades in college prep courses such as Advanced Placement courses is the number one factor used in college admission decisions.
Juniors who take the PSAT are automatically in the running for the National Merit Scholarship competition. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. The top 50,000 high scorers are entered into the National Merit Scholarship Competition. Of those 50,000 students, more than two-thirds (about 34,000) students receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their Outstanding academic promise. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by Corporations and businesses. In early September, about 16,000 students are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, Semifinalists must complete an application, and advance to Finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards and all other requirements explained here.
In support of our district mission to ENGAGE, EQUIP, and EMPOWER each student to realize their full potential, LEHS is committed to providing our sophomores and juniors with this important assessment opportunity as part of our college going expectation. We want all students to have the opportunity to see how their skills compare nationally as they prepare for their post-secondary goals. Please encourage all sophomores and juniors to get plenty of sleep Tuesday night, to eat a healthy breakfast Wednesday morning, and bring a couple of #2 pencils. Encourage all Sophomore and Junior students who will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday to do their best. This is a no-risk opportunity to see how well they are prepared for advanced level courses and college entrance exams such as SAT and ACT with the possible benefit of qualifying for college scholarships. In the words of Malcolm X, “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today. “

Counseling Needs Survey
The LEHS counseling team strives to provide meaningful activities, support, and learning opportunities that are in line with the current needs identified by students, parents, and staff on our yearly survey. Based on previous years’ responses, we have increased career counseling opportunities, offered small group lessons focused on time management and organization, facilitated increased support in preparing for post-secondary success, and created the Tuesday Talks parent education series, among other activities.
We are continually working to ensure that the services and activities we implement are in line with the needs of our students and families, and your feedback is critical to that process. On September 13, we sent out the parent version of the survey, which may be found here: https://forms.gle/bnvzGTmz1Zzaszbk8. The student survey includes the same questions as the parent survey.. Like the parent version, the student survey is not mandatory and does not collect identifying information such as names or email addresses. With this survey, we are looking for trends to direct programming, particularly in areas identified as high-need by multiple stakeholder groups, which include students, parents, and staff members.
If you would like to opt your student out of participating in this survey, please complete the Opt Out Form by Friday, October 18. If opted out, your student will receive instructions not to complete the survey, and his or her teacher will be made aware that the student will not be participating.
If you have not yet had an opportunity to complete the parent survey and would like to, it is not too late to do so. We encourage and appreciate your participation and look forward to using your feedback to evaluate and direct our school counseling activities.
Thank you,

High school students often do not want to participate in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. The Federal Free/Reduced Lunch Program is the standard used by many programs to qualify students for financial assistance. Even if a student never uses their eligibility in the lunchroom, they can benefit greatly in other areas if they qualify for the Lunch Program. Eligibility has to be reestablished each year. You can fill out the application here. We highly suggest that all families fill out an application to see if you qualify.

Report Harmful, Harassing, and Bullying Behavior
LEISD has an on-line tool called "Anonymous Alerts" that students, parents, and teachers can use to report harmful, harassing, and bullying type behaviors. Anonymous Alerts bullying reporting mobile app helps combat bullying and other negative activity in schools by empowering students to speak up. Social and peer pressures are some of the hardest obstacles for students to overcome. Anonymous Alerts encourages students, parents and staff to quickly, easily, and anonymously report bullying, cyber-bullying, gang-related issues, and other sensitive topics through private messages to school officials by building. All reports remain completely anonymous even during a two-way email conversation, although submitters have the option to reveal their identity if they prefer to have a person-to-person discussion.
