Principal's Weekly Update

RAISE Goal: to show integrity by making good choices on wet weather days

Te reo phrase of the week: nā wai tēnei _____? (Whose ____is this?)

Kia ora,

I hope everybody received the notice on Monday night that included information about our upcoming learning conferences on Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th June. These conferences are very much about meeting with the teacher, celebrating your child’s achievement, and discussing their goals for the future. Thank you to the large number of people who have already made an appointment. If you haven’t, please click on the link below to book a time that works for you. Please remember that school finishes at 2 pm on Wednesday and Thursday next week. We really appreciate a prompt pick up, as this helps our teachers get ready to start on time at 2:30 pm. The first bus will leave at 2 pm. Please ensure that someone is able to pick up your child from the bus stop at this earlier time.

Don't forget, tomorrow is another day.

Room 1

We have been having a lot of fun during Aumangea Taima this term.

This week we used the flexo to create traps that could be used on our mountain to catch pests. The trap had to be safe enough that if it caught a native animal the animal would remain unharmed unitil the trap was checked. We had some awesome creations! Ask your child what they made this week. We definitely have some forward-thinking future engineers in Room One!

Room 2

In Room 2 this week we are learning to manage our time better and independently complete our work. We have also been writing a report about a pest or animal that lives on Maunga Taranaki. In our report we need a classification, description and conclusion. Each student has been learning about their chosen animal, and finding specific information such as population, habitat, appearance and diet.

Room 3

With Matariki coming up, Room 3 has been creating artwork inspired by the seven stars of Matariki. We used watercolours to paint the background. It was a challenge to blend the two different colours together, but in the end we were all pleased with the first step in our piece of artwork.

Room 4

Another fantastic week in Room 4 has flown by! We made observational drawings of Maunga Taranaki using pencil and rubber to shade and highlight dark and light areas. We also imagined swimming in the Chilly Wilkie’s Pools and going down the slippery steps to Dawson Falls for our writing. Our maps are all finished and looking fantastic! Chloe and Sivarah wrote this about them… “Room 4 did art on the maps. We put the mountain and Matapu School on them. Room 4 drew their homes on the map. We also put roads on the maps. We had fun.” The map in the picture belongs to Joshua.

Room 5

My goodness it is already the end of week 7! This term has flown by. We have been super lucky this term to have a free trial of a maths app called Matific. This app is awesome as Miss Rose gets to set individualized work for each child and monitor their learning. We have to work our way up a map solving maths problems on the way. We have LOVED it and we have completed so many tasks!

Room 6

During maths we have been exploring Numicon which is a great hands- on maths system that encourages thinking and manipulation of materials. It can be used across many areas and it has been fun to represent numbers to 10 and learn more about teen numbers too.

Have a look at the different ways we have used it, from exploring the equipment, to making number sequences, to creating tens numbers. We love Numicon!
