MRHS Mock Trial Team Beats Nauset & Moves on to Regionals!
On Wednesday the Monomoy Regional High School mock trial team completed its participation in the preliminary round of the 2018 Massachusetts Bar Association’s Mock Trial competition with a 102 to 98 victory over Nauset Regional High School. This follows on the heels of recent victories over Sturgis East Charter School and Barnstable High School. As a result, the team has now qualified for the state regional round to be held at Clark University in Worcester on March 4th.
The team is in the midst of its thirteenth year of participation in the mock trial program sponsored by the Massachusetts Bar Association. The program, now in its 33rd year, provides Monomoy students with the opportunity to compete against approximately 140 teams from across the state. Schools are placed into one of 32 geographic regions and compete in three preliminary rounds within their region where teams alternate between arguing the prosecution/plaintiff and defense sides of that year’s assigned case. During the trials, students assume the roles of attorneys and witnesses and their performances are scored by the trial judge. Based on a team’s performance in the preliminary rounds, a winner for each region is determined and the winning teams move on to the championship rounds where an eventual state champion is crowned.
Preparation for the competition begins in late October when the case materials are released by the Massachusetts Bar Association. The first trials begin in mid -January and may extend into late March depending on the success of the team. This year’s team is comprised of Cesca Barr, Grace Boyle, Shauna Speakman, Danny Arregoces, Sage Barnes, Alison Barrett, Jaymie Buffington, Holly Evans, Kaitlyn Germann, Trevor Russell, Lily Ryan, Julie Slade and Nathan Follett. The team is assisted in their trial preparation by attorney coach Mark Russell, Monomoy elementary school teacher (and licensed attorney) Elizabeth Ambrosino, and MRHS teacher Kevin Bates. Monomoy STEMinist Club Update
The Monomoy STEMinist Club was recently contacted by OPAK's Executive Director, Jeffrey Morgan, regarding an upcoming event. On Saturday, June 9th, Ocean Protection Advocacy Kids, Inc. (OPAK) is screening Sylvia's Earle film Mission Blue at the Chatham Orpheum Theater as part of an event called: One Ocean, One Cape Cod: A Marine Celebration. The event is in honor of World Oceans Day which is on June 8th. Following the film, there will be a panel discussion and short Q&A on ocean advocacy.
Mr. Morgan reached out to us and asked if the Monomoy STEMinist Club would be willing to moderate the panel discussion after the documentary and I am pleased to share that the girls have accepted the challenge! The young women of the club are very excited and would love to invite each of you to attend the event.
A special shark shout out to Ms. Adriana Picariello (marine science expert and amazing human being!), for volunteering to provide additional support and feedback as the STEMinists develop their questions for the event!
Great job to Ms. Flint, founder of the club!

Shark "Shout Outs" MRHS's way of Appreciating the Great People That Make Our School "A Home Away From Home" Please share any good news with us!
Shout out to student Abby Kelley, who created Valentine's Day tree (pictured above) with kind messages, sweets, and a note to pick up everyone's spirit. Thank you, Abby! #620
I would like to give a shark shout out to Brienna Notaro. Just before Jawsome was over, I was with a couple students starting our daily routine of washing the cafeteria tables. Without a thought, Brienna came over and asked if she could help us with the tables. It is very pleasing when a student just offers to help without being asked or assigned to a task.
Ms. Forte-Doyle
Huge Shark Shout Out to Cody Doyle and his expertise around the school whenever woodworking magic is needed! Not only is he equipped with the knowledge and talent and creativity to see a job through from concept to completion; but his timeliness in working a project through to fruition is impressive! Cody's mannerism is professional, he is self-motivated in gathering details and following up, and he moves on to the next project, while folks are offering accolades for the last job already well done! Thank you Cody, you are an asset to the Monomoy family!
Ms. Ferro
Joanne and I would like to thank all that came to Casual for a Cause!! Your generosity raised almost $300.00 dollars for Angie's Scholarship. And the food was excellent!! Much thanks to all!
Sharon and Joanne
Shout out to Kerri Robinson for driving the ALP students to work - but also for taking the time to come up and share a positive story about them. Patrick and Trent jumped out of the car to help an elderly man and his wife after seeing him take a fall. She told me how they helped calm the couple down and assisted until paramedics arrived. She sets a great example of stopping to help but also for caring about the kids enough to share their positive story with me. #620
Mr. Sowpel
I'd like to send a Shark Shout Out to Rich Oldach for sharing how he has students maintain a weekly journal of their progress in class. What a great way to engage students in the learning process and to empower students to assess their own learning! Can't wait to try this out in my own classes!!
Ms. Flint

Students can stop in at anytime during Jawsome. There will be a series of questions posted around the room and students are able to drop by and respond. Students will also have access to principal Burkhead during that time to talk about things that are important to them. The goal is to allow students to share their feelings about our school, to share their possible solutions and for us to take action. Ultimately, we want to move our school from Good to GREAT!
