A Message from Dr. Connery

Dear Simpson Parents,

Happy November! It was wonderful to see many of you last week during Early Release Parent-Teacher Conferences. This is always such a valuable time for you to talk with the teacher to see how your child is progressing both academically and socially. I am confident you found this time beneficial. Early Release conferences are held twice a year. The next early release days will be held on February 17th & 18th. We will again be scheduling conferences online. Also, the Parent Portal is a great way for you to stay informed about your child’s academic progress 24 hours a day/7 days a week. You can monitor student assignments and assessments if you have a child in grades 1st – 5th. Finally, many thanks to our amazing Simpson Elementary PTA for delivering each homeroom their own set of recess sports balls. This is just another way to provide safety and security measures with each class having their own set of play equipment to sanitize daily. At Simpson, we are so grateful for our parent-teacher community for their support. Have a wonderful month and a Happy Thanksgiving. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any assistance.

Proud to be your principal,

Dr. Connery

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th through October 15th, by celebrating the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic American citizens (whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central, and South America). We had an amazing time last month learning about Hispanic American artists, athletes, inventors, educators, and authors. One of the highlights was having a local children's book author, Ms. Nury Crawford who visited all Pre-K through 5th-grade classes via ZOOM and read her book called, 3,858 miles to be an American Girl! She discussed growing up as a little girl in Peru, coming to the United States, and the challenges she endured learning the English language. It was so much fun listening to her talk about her past, her culture, and the great questions posed by students had about her life journey. Again, we want to send a huge "THANK YOU" for the outstanding instructional lessons provided by Mr. Rivera, Ms. Nakano, and the Connections team for helping our superstars celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at Simpson Elementary!

It's time for the Gwinnett Science and Engineering Fair!

For the 2020-2021 Gwinnett Science, Engineering and Innovation Fair, our elementary students will have the opportunity to design solutions to real problems that we face in Gwinnett County and in Georgia. Students will select a problem that they have an interest in and then work within the engineering design process to create their solution.

STEM Projects differ from most traditional research projects. In a STEM project, students will design a new solution to a problem, build it, and test the outcomes.

This year's fair is completely digital. More information can be found in the Simpson Science Fair Google Classroom. Students must be logged in to their GCPS accounts to join. The classroom code is: qpxddxy

STEM projects must be completed and submitted by Friday, January 15 at 4PM. Winners will be announced by Friday, January 29th. The top 3 winners from our school will proceed to the first round of judging at the county level.

We can't wait to see what you create!

On October 16th, the Simpson PTA gifted each classroom with a mesh bag full of recess balls. Students and teachers love their time outside and now each class can have extra fun with this new equipment.

Thank you to all the Simpson parents and staff that have donated to the PTA this year...we couldn't do this without your continued support! This is a small glimpse of the PTA's ongoing efforts to support our students and staff. Bestselling and Caldecott Award winning author/illustrator visits Simpson

The PTA Arts in Education Program welcomed #1 New York Times Bestselling and Caldecott Award winning author and illustrator Tony DiTerlizzi for a virtual visit to Simpson on October 7th! Mr. DiTerlizzi is the creative mind behind The Spiderwick Chronicles, Kenny & the Dragon, and his latest book Kenny & the Book of Beasts. Students in 3rd-5th grade thoroughly enjoyed a unique opportunity via Zoom learning about Mr. DiTerlizzi's writing and illustrating process, where he draws inspiration for his works, and what the editing process is like for his beloved and richly imaginative books. From his studio, Mr. DiTerlizzi gave a first-hand drawing tutorial for Grahame the dragon while students followed along creating their own illustration. Our Simpson Superstars had some really insightful questions for Mr. DiTerlizzi during the visit! The PTA Arts in Education Program is looking forward to providing more extremely enriching arts experiences for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year for our Simpson Superstars! Thanks for your continued participation and support!

Bike Safety Class

Our safety course for 4th and 5th grade bike riders was a great success! A huge thank you to Sara Wiggins, Christy Grant, and our Gwinnett County Police Officers for your dedication to making sure our students practice safe routes to school.
