Calling all Singers!

It's our turn to participate in chorus! Ms. Phillips will present the information and permission slips during the next music class. Slips are due by the first rehearsal which will take place on Valentine's Day!

Valentine's Day Party

We'll be celebrating Valentine's Day on February 14th with the exchange of valentines and an ice cream sundae party! Each student has a list in his/her Friday folder. It's also attached below just in case the paper copy gets lost. It isn't mandatory to bring in valentines, however, if your child decides to, s/he must bring one for each classmate. It would be great if your child could design and/or decorate some type of box or bag to bring to school that day to collect all of the goodies. I just saw this week that Michael's has boxes with covers with a slit to use for collecting cards. They are $2.99 with 40% off! Please check out the sign-up genius below for the ice cream party!

Math

Mrs. Close's Class ~ We have officially finished Module 4. Students have their corrected tests. They need to be signed and returned on Monday. You'll find the January CML in your child's Friday folder. We've reviewed each question. You'll see a correction sheet attached to that CML where your 4th graders has shown the correct work and reflected upon their original work. Our next unit is Module 5! I have placed a Module 5 "cheat sheet" in your child's Friday Folder. Module 5 is LONG! In this 40-day module, students build on their 3rd grade work with unit fractions as they explore fraction equivalence and extend this understanding to mixed numbers. This leads to the comparison of fractions and mixed numbers and the representation of both in a variety of models. Benchmark fractions play an important part in students’ ability to generalize and reason about relative fraction and mixed number sizes. Students then have the opportunity to apply what they know to be true for whole number operations to the new concepts of fraction and mixed number operations.

Mr. Lawton's Class ~ We have covered multiplication and division strategies. We have also worked with factors and multiples. We are now beginning multi-step multiplication and division problems. We are coming to the end of Unit 3. Next up is Geometry. I have a YouTube channel I update with walkthroughs of practice questions for quizzes and homework help. My YouTube ID is MrLawton139.

ELA

Reading - During the upcoming week we are going to work on synthesizing information from two texts. This is big work as the kids will need to apply everything they know about nonfiction and what they know about writing into one task. Be patient with us as we make our way.

Benchmarking - It is the season for data collection! Throughout the next four weeks, I will be collecting information on your child as a reader. I'll be working individually with all of the students to see if each child has become more fluent and better at comprehending text. Look for those updates on the March 3rd report card.

Small Groups ~ We continue to meet often! We are enjoying the plot of each book.

PAWS ~ The kids are truly writing great pieces. It's very exciting for me to see how far they have come since November. The next assignment has been handed out just in case some kids want to get a head start! I appreciate all the home support for this very important assignment.

MISC ~ We have been working on there, they're, and their all week. In addition, to, two, and too! More work on the homophones during the upcoming week.

Picture Book Friday ~ Henry is going to read to us on Monday and Natalie is on for next Friday. Look for pictures in next week's newsletter.
