Isolationism to World Power
In Module Three you will learn about how the United States becomes a world power at the turn of the 20th century by expanding American economic markets, military intervention, and gaining colonies overseas through American imperialism.
Lesson One deals with the Progressive Movement. You learned a lot about the origins of this movement in your studies of robber barons/captains of industry and the muckrakers in module 2. The Progressives desired improvements focused on social welfare, economic reform, and advancing moral behaviors in general. The years between 1907 and 1912 were politically charged times for the nation.Teddy Roosevelt was a power house president who set stage for the progressives and set the nation to be a leader on the world stage. When William Taft was elected, he paled in comparison to Roosevelt's huge personality. One thing Taft was know for was Trust-Busting. He busted up over 90 companies and formally dissolved the Standard Oil Company. Ida Tarbell was instrumental in seeing this come to pass. Today you will take a closer look at The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair which spurred reform for the meatpacking industry in much the same way.
You will also analyze an excerpt from Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. (This is very similar to how you analyzed the speeches from Washington and Dubois from the last module.) I have linked and article from Schmoop below to supplement some info on Sinclair and the meat packing industry.
The remaining assignment is a forum post you will create on Imperialism. You will need to choose and article and based on the article post to the class discussion forum. You will need to respond to the posts by two of your classmates. I will grade this assignment in its entirely when all parts are complete. I have linked a great Crash Course Clip below that explains this time period.
