A Message from the Office of the Superintendent
The school year continues to move right along as we wrap up fall sports and begin the 2nd quarter. We continue to monitor COVID cases and quarantines and that information is still shown daily on our website. The district numbers peaked in early to mid-September and we have been running much lower numbers since then. The district sent out a survey a couple of weeks ago sharing some of the struggles the school district is experiencing and asking for parents' thoughts about reducing the number of school days for next year's calendar. There was a lot of interest around that idea. The district will begin investigating that idea deeper and put together some ideas regarding some issues that would create and what it might look like IF the district went that direction. There will still need to be much conversation with the community, staff, and the school board before any decisions are made. Thank you so much for all of your support of the school district and our students. We continue to look forward to the great things that the rest of the year will bring.

Pardon our Progress Early Childhood Center Update
Construction on the early childhood center has begun. Initial dirt work for the building site, parking lots, water retention areas, and the Elm Street entrance is nearing completion. Over the next few weeks, the building foundations will begin to take shape with footers being poured. We are excited to watch this project take shape over the coming months. We appreciate your understanding and patience as the project contractors are working on the Hubble Elementary and R. A. Barr Stadium sites.
To learn more about this project, please visit mjays.com and check out the Marshfield ECC Project page. You’ll find videos and monthly progress reports on what the littlest BlueJays will experience starting in August of 2022.
Hubble Elementary
October has been full of exciting learning experiences at Hubble. Transportation day was a fun day planned by our Parents as Teachers program to connect with families and teach students about safety while meeting community helpers. During Fire Safety Week our local fire department came to teach students about fire safety and allowed students to explore a fire truck. Mrs. Floyd’s kindergarten class had a cute visitor named Wally who helped them understand hedgehogs prior to an engaging read-aloud about a fictional hedgehog who had a problem to solve! Mrs. Stilley’s first grade class read The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown followed by a writing response using the story’s pattern to write about apples. These are just a few highlights, but it’s always a great day to be a Blue Jay at Hubble Elementary!
Webster Elementary
Webster third graders have been learning all about the properties of matter in science. Classrooms made oobleck, which can mimic the qualities of both a solid and a liquid. This fun experiment allowed students to explore and better understand the properties of solids and liquids. Students have continued their learning about matter investigating how heating and cooling will impact the state of matter, as well as reversible and irreversible matter changes. Pictured below is Stefanie Fryman’s class making oobleck.
Shook Elementary
Ms. Weatherly’s 5th grade class at Shook has been hard at work mastering the theme of a text. Small groups have discussions for EVERY book they share together, then present what they feel the theme is to the class. Ms. Weatherly says that while she may go into the lesson with one theme in mind, her thoughts are often changed depending on how convincing students are with their text evidence. After the possible themes are presented, the class votes on which one they felt was the strongest, and even though all of the choices may have been good, the one with the most votes wins.
Jr. High
Coffee, anyone? Students arrived at their respective 6th grade reading classes which were transformed into Flower’s Classy Coffee Shop and Stewart’s Savory Coffee Shop. The classrooms had been decorated into a coffee shop theme. Tabletop centerpieces, jazzy music, dimmed lighting, and teachers dressed as baristas added to the atmosphere. While the students were served scrumptious treats and hot beverages, they enjoyed reading the latest issue of the Marshfield Mail. Ms. Flower and Ms. Stewart created the Coffee Shop as a fun way to introduce the upcoming Book Club and to get students excited about reading. The book club is a twist on traditional literature groups. Students will enjoy the coffee shop several times throughout the year as new books are introduced and read. Ms. Flower and Ms. Stewart’s goal with the book club is to foster a love of reading as well as build a culture of reading. The book club allows for more student discussion and engagement as they contribute and share during their book talks."
High School
"The MHS Ecology went to Camp Arrowhead to experience hands-on, field data collection.
Mrs. Blanton taught ecological sampling techniques. She did things like mark and recapture craydad sampling.
Mrs. Donham had a scavenger hunt over biotic and abiotic factors. Students that found the most correct factors were the winners.
Mrs. Whiteman taught leaf identification. She had students identify different types of trees and submit pictures to prove the correct identification.
Mrs. Fields taught stream water quality identification. Students did net samples then picked off the bugs. We identified the bugs to determine water quality. The more diversity you have of sensitive species, the better the water quality is. We determined the stream to have excellent water quality.
We also hiked to the cave and looked around. It was an amazing experience with awesome kids!"

NEED TO MAKE CHANGES TO YOUR STUDENT'S DAILY BUS TRANSPORTATION?
Contact Central Office 417-859-2120 ext. 0 with your student's name, security code and the address the student will be traveling to and/or from. Setting up new bus transportation does not change the home address for the student records.
Marshfield Schools is excited to join districts all across the region and the Greater Ozarks Cooperating School Districts for “Teacher Proud Tuesdays!” On the second Tuesday of every month we’ll be highlighting one of our fantastic teachers, BUT we need your help. To nominate an outstanding teacher for “Teacher Proud Tuesdays,” please complete the form at HERE. Nominate as many teachers as you’d like, and keep in mind the nominations will roll over from one month to the next, so no need to resubmit your nominations. We’re looking forward to celebrating our teaching staff through this initiative along with other fellow school districts all across the area!
Mrs. Lewis's students are looking forward to fall harvest in the Blue Jay Outdoor Garden!
