Meadow Park News

Principal's Corner
It's been wonderful to welcome our students back into the building! I hope you have been able to ask your child how their first week has been and that they have had something fun to report from at least a couple of classes. I know as I have walked around the building I've seen teachers engaging students in numerous community building activities -- from rubber band cup stacking challenges to partner interviews to community circles. It's been great to see staff and students engaging in building the type of community we want to see at The Park!
One focus area you may be hearing about from students (and in articles below!) is that every middle school in the district has moved to an off and away policy for personal electronic devices including AirPods and other headphones. The use of these devices, unfortunately, often leads to a lack of engagement in classroom learning and a breakdown in the sense of community we are trying to create with students. We are fortunate that our school provides Chromebooks for students. Although not perfect, those devices can be managed centrally, viewed by staff, and monitored to keep students from off task behavior. As a staff, we are committed to asking our students to engage in learning while they are here and will be asking that all students leave any personal device turned off and either in their locker, backpack, or pocket from 9:15 to 3:50 each day. If you need to reach out to your student, please call our main office and we will get a message to them right away! Please also note that our school will not be responsible for lost or stolen electronic devices. If you are concerned that your child might lose an important or expensive item (including AirPods--they are tiny and easy to lose), ask them to keep it at home!
I hope that each student at Meadow Park has started the year on a positive note and with hope for the best school year yet. I look forward to working with each of your and your children throughout the year.
Make it a great week 2!

Student Phones & Technology During School Hours
Last reminder...
Just a reminder that Meadow Park is an “off and away” school. This means students will be allowed to bring their phones to school, however during school hours they are to keep them off and put them away in a safe place. This decreases distractions and ensures that students are fully engaged throughout the day. If students need to call home, they will always have access to a phone in the health room or main office. If you need to contact your student urgently, please call the office (503-356-2640) and we will get them a message right away. We appreciate your support with this, as this is an area where sometimes students need clear expectations.
Continuing with the technology topic, here is a link to a great article on screen time and teenagers. We hope you find this article informative and relevant as a parent, especially with technology being present in every part of our lives.
Do you volunteer? Maybe even just one time a year?
Last reminder...
As a reminder, for the safety and welfare of students and staff, ALL volunteer activities must be coordinated and tracked through myimpactpage.com, the District’s online volunteer management system. Volunteers must sign in and sign out through the volunteer computer located in the school front office.
To use the computer sign in, volunteers need the username and password they created for the Volunteer and Background Check Application process. To retrieve, or reset either of these, go to myimpactpage.com and click on the “Forgot Username or Password” link. The username and a temporary password will be emailed to the volunteer. To create a new permanent password, click on the “My Profile” tab on the myvolunteerpage.com home page.
Parent/Guardian Volunteers: Your myimpactpage profile is NOT linked to your child(s) information and will not follow them to different locations. In preparation for the 19/20 school year, send an email to update_volunteer_locations@beaverton.k12.or.us if your child will be moving to a different school or level.
Please note, volunteer profiles will be archived if you have not logged into your profile or have not signed in through the volunteer computer for two (2) years after initially being cleared by the District to volunteer. This became a problem for some of our parents who wanted to volunteer during the 8th Grade Party. Please make this a Back-To-School "to-do" so that you are ready to go in the fall!
Nutrition Services Information - Easy to access!
Nutrition Services information is easier to access this year, and we have lots of cool information to share! Click on the link below to go to SchoolCafe, and see all the things that you can do:
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/departments/nutrition-services/meals/schoolcafe.
Remember that the 30-day Rollover Period for 2018-2019 meal benefits will end in early October. Be sure to apply TODAY so your students don’t have a lapse in benefits. Any families whose students go into “Paid” status will be responsible to pay for all meals charged in school cafeterias. Don’t let this happen to you!
All you need is your student’s ID number. If you don’t have that, you can call your school office
or the Meal Benefits line (503-356-3957). Here are some of your options in SchoolCafe:
- Create an account
- Apply for Meal Benefits
- View and print Meal Benefits letters
- See what items your student is getting in the cafeteria.
- Check your student’s account balance.
- View cafeteria menus
- Set up low balance alerts
- Set up auto-pay (when balance gets to an amount that YOU set, the account is replenished from your credit card)
