OTSEGO LOCAL SCHOOLS

Superintendent's Weekly Update - August 14th

Otsego Community -

I hope everyone had a safe and healthy week.

We are still on track as of today to start 5 days. Previous emails and restart information can be found by CLICKING HERE

We are excited to get the school year started! 10 days from today! The Governor talked a lot about what we all do outside of school and in the community will have a direct impact on our ability to continue to have in-person schooling this year. We all need to do our part so that our kids can continue in-person learning. We are doing a good job in the Otsego Community based on the cases per our zip codes. This is why we are still able to have school in-person. We are not a red county and the cases in our zip codes are low. We must do everything we can do continue this. Mask Up, Back up, Wash up is our theme this year in school and I hope this theme is outside of school as well. We all need to do our part!

Rumor Control- A few people told us that they heard that we are going to send students directly to the hospital if they get sick when they are at school. This is FALSE. Parents will be notified. More information below.

Self Assessing Symptoms - This is very important this year. If your student is sick, please do not send them to school. We will be using the following flow chart this year. Please review this flow chart HERE

Parents need to conduct a wellness check every morning.

  • Conduct a student wellness check including temperature prior to sending a student to school. Students with temperatures at or over 100°F (not controlled by medication) must stay home.

  • Provide a mask for your student to wear daily.

The Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention (“CDC”) indicates you may have COVID-19 if you have: ● Fever or chills ● Cough ● Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing ● Fatigue ● Muscle or body aches ● Headache ● New loss of taste or smell ● Sore throat ● Congestion or runny nose ● Nausea or vomiting ● Diarrhea

Without question, students returning to school buildings include risks of contracting COVID-19. Even with everyone following the district's guidelines and all cleaning efforts, risks remain. We take our responsibilities to students very seriously, and we will continue to monitor COVID-19 with health officials, implement revised safety protocols as needed, and provide updates to our families.

Otsego Parent Pledge:

I have read and understood the importance of following the district’s guidelines created in collaboration with our local health department and CDC guidance in reducing the known risks associated with students returning to school buildings.

I pledge to follow the district’s guidelines and join other students, parents, staff, and community members in their efforts to keep our schools safe and students healthy.

As a parent/guardian, I further pledge to keep my child or children home if they have: a fever over 100 degrees, have symptoms included in the guidelines, had close contact with a person who has COVID-19, or tested positive for COVID-19; and, I will make arrangements in advance to prepare for this possibility.

Communication is going to very important this year. We need to know if your children have had close contact with someone that has tested positive for COVID-19. Please communicate with your building office when circumstances arise.

Transportation:

Bus routes will be available on August 17th. I will email a link out that you can input your address into and it will tell you your bus times. Drivers will be calling each student on their bus the week of August 18th.

Food Service:

We will be emailing menus out next Tuesday. There are a lot of changes that have to be made on how we serve. Options will be limited to start and we will add choices and items throughout the year. Menus are going to be subject to change. We will communicate any changes as they come.

Free and Reduced Application - please CLICK HERE to apply for a free and reduced waiver.

Normally we collect lunch money at back to school days and this helps a lot for the first couple of weeks. Please send money with your children on the first day of school or add money to their accounts online. Online instructions can be found HERE

Masks:

Reminder- Masks are mandated on campus. Please be prepared to send a mask with each of your students every day. We will have extras on our buses and in the office. We will provide an Otsego Mask for every student. They will get it on the first day. The mask policy is both an Otsego Policy and a State of Ohio mandate.

Drinking Fountains:

We will not be using our drinking fountains this year. You may send in a water bottle for them to use throughout the day.

Building Temperatures:

An added safety feature this year will be changing our HVAC system to bring in more fresh air to the system. We are still going to be cooling the building but the humidity levels will be increased in the buildings.

Online Students-

If you did not pick up your Chromebook, you can come to each individual office next week to pick it up. They will be available from 8 to 3 pm next week.

Online students will be able to get school pictures this year. If you would like to come in that would be ok. We will communicate when our picture days

Chromebook Log In Information: We are working on a webpage and communication to explain how to log into a school-issued Chromebook. We hope to have this out to you by Tuesday, August 18th.

Athletics:

We are still waiting for guidance from the Governor's office on athletics and spectators. He hinted that spectators are going to very extremely limited this year and it could be just parents and the student-athletes. We will communicate this out when we get guidance from the state. At this time we do not have approval for competition for contact sports (soccer and football). We anticipate getting all of this guidance on Tuesday at the press conference. Stay tuned for this information. We will be live streaming every game that we can. We will do our best to live stream games for our community depending on the number of people we can get to help us.

Go Knights!

MASK FUNDRAISERS

Several organizations are doing mask fundraisers. We normally do not have the same fundraisers but it just so happens we are this time. Pick which one you like the best I guess or buy one from each! Thanks for the support!

The Otsego School Board has unanimously voted to implement a district-wide mask policy. Otsego will be providing one mask for every student and staff member.

In order to better protect our students and staff, it is recommended that your mask is washed after every wear. To reduce how often you have to launder your masks, it may be beneficial to purchase or provide multiple for your students.

There are adult and youth sizes available at all of the places.

HS STUDENT COUNCIL

The following link will allow you to purchase white background masks in adult sizes only.

https://www.bonfire.com/store/otsego-hs-student-council--mask-fundraiser/

The following link will allow you to purchase black background masks in youth and adult sizes, in over the ear or sports style. Please note, the sport style is done through screen printing, and may want to be turned so the design is off center to aid in talking, in addition, the Small/Medium would be the youth size, Large/Xl would be the adult size. The over the ear style is done through sublimation, so the design is fused to the fabric, and there is a sizing chart in the listing to reference.

Both fundraisers provide the option for direct shipments to your home. If you choose to pick up from the HS commons, we will organize a pick up time once all masks styles come in. We will share this time and date through newsletters and social media.
